Despite its beauty, this cathedral is not-so-much visited; it was completely at our disposition, and the prospicient square was completely empty as well.

The high steeple of the cathedral dwarfs everything around. Inside, the baroque nave has a quiet dignity as befits a place of worship. Alexandria itself is quietly elegant and is well worth a visit.

Alessandria is a down at heel, rather dull Italian town which is eminently missable. Napoleon really gave it its only claim to fame - and the village of Marengo, the site of the famous battle, is outside.
If I could have reviewed the place generically then my conclusion would have been stay on the autostrada and go somewhere else.

This cathedral isn't very old, 19 th century, but the original was built in the 13 th century. The inside is very ornate but worth a visit if you come to Alessandria.

Very nice old church and square in Alessandria. Like most of the churches which are one for every 200 people in Italy, they are all quite beautiful.

The church of St. Peter and St. Mark, which is the cathedral of Alessandria, a church from the historical and artistic value incalculable, built around the year 1100 AD and completely destroyed during the Napoleonic invasion by Napoleon and later rebuilt fwew meters away from the original location, right where the church stands today. Remodeled several times over the centuries, today the cathedral itself with its high bell tower that stands over the city is a beautiful example of neo-classical and well a bit different from what it was in the past, before the destruction of a work of Gothic style. Nice yard and the facade of the cathedral, the interior is huge and rich in works of art. The dome and the bell tower are the outstanding highlights of the complex. Absolutely a must-see.
