Magnificent place, soothing and full of emotions.
The Chapel is one of the only ones to pay tribute to the deceased; it is possible to reflect and write a little note for your child in a pretty guest book.
Very pretty garden and shop.
Of course everyone is very welcoming and relaxed, it soothes our hearts.

During our short visit in the Perche region, we saw an advertisement for a small chorale concert at this Basilica. As it turned out, we arrived just as the audience was applauding its appreciation and people were starting to file out. Nonetheless the walls within still echoed of the life of this holy place.
We wandered respectfully among the musicians and the dispersing audience. In fact this is indeed an active and modern church untouched by religion wars and the Revolution. It makes us sad for all the beauty that was destroyed in the older catered reals of France.
But Chapelle Montligeon is a quiet refuge that would draw us back many times if we lived anywhere near there.

Although we are not Catholic, we found ourselves in this majestic church on Resurrection Day. We were encouraged to go there by some residents of le Perche, who were understandably proud of this beautiful basilica. We have seen many cathedrals in Europe, but this one is certainly one of the most comforting. It seemed a fitting place for an Easter Sunday, as the sun was shining, and the soaring, white walls lent a luminance to the scene, befitting the event we had come to celebrate. I couldn't understand the priest's message, as it was in French, but the music was beautiful. We had come to worship, and we certainly were uplifted in this peaceful, lovely place.

Dear Quiddity2, Thanks for your very kind review about the basilica and what you experienced in Montligeon on Easter Sunday. The priests and all the team around are doing their best to make and keep this place a peaceful and beautiful one, and I'll make sure they know about your positive comments. Let us know if you happen to come back! Best regards Marie-Liesse

We stayed in this village for a week and the cathedral stands out of the countryside looking down over the people of La Chappelle-Montigeon like a benign presence. It is a truly remarkable sight. Inside it is an oasis of calm and serenity. We saw the nuns and priests chatting on the balcony of the sanctuary. The village itself is lovely too, with horse riding and tennis courts.

This stunning neo-gothic basilica set in the middle of the green lower Normandy countryside was the result of the folly of a priest who insisted on implementing his vision dedicated to the glory of faith. It took from 1896 to 1911 to finish and besides a lovely classical exterior and interior it is surrounded by harmonious French style buildings that form an architectural ensemble like you see in the Loire Valley or around Versailles!

Inside one of the buildings you will find a soap making workshop with items for sale.

The village itself is very pleasant and has a couple of nice restaurants including the wonderful Montligeon hotel and restaurant which I have reviewed elsewhere (but be aware that the restaurant is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays).

Incredible: Right in the heart of rural Normandy....a vast Cathedral with a huge seminary nearby. Apparently those in religious orders ( Catholic that is ) who have 'lost their way', insofar as their faith has been shaken for whatever reason, can stay at Notre Dame de Montligeon to find their way back to the path of Catholic righteousness.
Lovely setting - charming village. So bizarre to find such imposing buildings at the top of small village nestling in the hills of southern Normandy.
