Hi, firstly we love love Peregrine and always stop there when the opportunity arise.
It was however disappointing from a food perspective. The curry pies (R33 each of I recall correctly) had much less curry mince in than about 9 months ago with a thick crust making it dry.
Secondly, we bought an apple pie (R95), which is expensive. The apple pie’s crust is thick and dry and the apples inside sticky dry.
I would urge the owners to focus on the quality of the pastries and baked goods. I do not mind paying a premium, however then the quality has to be excellent. The quality and taste experience was disappointing to say the least.
Hope you take this as positive and act on it.

Focused on the tourist rather than the South African. Inflated pieces on goods you can get for almost half the price at some of the other wine farms and stops close by.

We were recently wanting breakfast at Peregrine. There were so many people which means it's got demand and is in a good position, however it seems that the staff are unable to ramp up service at busy peak times. It takes a long time to get served, a very long time to get your order and even longer to get the bill. It's not a leisurely stop, most people are travelling and want to get in and out. The offering is good, but perhaps we will try it again when out of season.

I bought a take away steak pie about a year ago (August 2017). It was more like a pastry pie with a hint of steak. I addition the generous pastry base stuck to the foil container which rendered the eating of the pie impossible on the move.
Today, 1 July 2018, a group of us had coffee and scones which was all really good.
On the way our we bought 2 steak pies and 2 chicken pies for supper
There is so much pastry that by the time one gets to the filling, one has forgotten what pie was on the plate in the first place.
Optimistically, there are no more than 2 level desert spoons of filling in the pies. The filling tastes great but my dog has put on weight eating the pastry.
The Ou Meul recipe should be looked at. Pastry is but the messenger not the meal.
Cheers Keith

Hi Keith. Thanks for your review. We're glad you enjoyed the coffee and scones and will definitely take your comments regarding the pies back to the bakery team to consider.

We drive by here fairly often and it’s not even an option to consider not stopping.
The quick pies are amazing (especially venison). The coffee is also great!
And then the little shop has some great food and interesting options.
And if you have some extra time; the coffee shop is definitely worth a stop!

Every year on my annual arrival back in my homeland, South Africa, this is the first shopping stop I make on route to Kleinmond. On the list- rusks, koeksusters, rooibos tea, guava jam, cape gooseberry jam, droewors and biltong, not forgetting a few bottles of magnificent South African wine!!! The list goes on and on. It is a joy to behold, the taste of home. It fills me with happiness.

A lovely farm stall in Grabouw. Half of the stall is a shop, and the other half is a café/restaurant. Peregrine has everything one could look for when it comes to local produce, from jersey butter to the best apple juice in the area. All sorts of jams, tarts, freshly baked breads and the likes are on offer at reasonable prices. Their pies are divine, especially their springbok (for the adventurous) and spanakopita/spinach and feta (for the not-so-adventurous). The only downside is that the stall lacks the country/farming atmosphere one would hope for, instead looking more like a modern local deli. Overall, one cannot go into Grabouw without stopping off at Peregrine.

We stopped for breakfast on the way to the Garden Route and found the food very tasty service very efficient and farm stall variety of home baked food outstanding. So much that we made a special plan to stop on the way back and we're not disappointed. Had juicy steak pies and fresh spinach and feta quiche. Will definitely go back as soon as possible.

I understand that you have to make a mark up on wines jams etc , but your prices are excessive , Raka wine at over R100 , when Spar charge under R60 ,if you dont believe me pop in and check the wine prices for your selves , preserved figs for R 58 , etc etc etc its one thing to put a small mark up for a country farm stall but this is highway robbery !When you realise that so may tourists stop here en route to from Hermanus etc it is a shame that they get so fleeced .No wonder they have such a fancy new restaurant .

Dear George
After reading your post, I thought for a moment that our suppliers must be fleecing us as our mark ups are very reasonable! So I did a quick comparison:
Raka Spiced: Spar R54.99, Peregrine - R56.
Raka Figurehead: Spar - R98.99, Peregrine R103.
Raka Biography: Spar R116.89, Peregrine R118.
You'll see that the difference is marginal and I'm sure you'll understand that it would be hard for us to match or beat a massive retail chain's prices.
With regards to the preserved figs, we always try to source the best quality local produce we can find, and in such cases one will always be able to find cheaper mass produced products.
Very glad you noticed our fancy new cafe :). It was unfortunately not off the back of wine sales that that happened, but due to a devastating fire in May and five months of hard work and considerable expense.
I hope that clears it up, but please feel free to ask for me next time you pop in, I'd be happy to chat.

With its wonderful location right along the N2, the Peregrine serves as a must stop for a filling meal or deliciously sweet dessert; serving the best Malva pudding in the Western Cape. Enjoy a cup of coffee while the kids play on the jungle gym or take a tour of the locally made baked goods and fresh fruit and veggies in the shop.
