This statue of Neptune sits in Durham Market Place, but seems to look somewhat out of place. Apparently it's from 1729, to symbolise the plan to turn Durham into an inland sea port by altering the course of the River Wear. Removed in 1923 to...More

Its a fairly standard statue, but I couldn't help thinking that something better could be occupying this central square location. Neptune's link to Durham is highly tenuous - its not a city that you can sense much of the ocean about. I think something more...More

Not a lot to say about this statue which is in an open cobbled area not very far from the castle and Cathedral. The surrounding steps are very worn indicating that many feet have trod the steps!

This statue can easily get missed as the other two statues in Market Place are larger and more photographed. The plaque on the side states that it was given to the city in 1729 as a symbol of the scheme to link the city to...More

I am not sure why one would need to add this particular statue to one's bucket list. It is a statue of Neptune and to be honest I have seen better. However if you need to call in Boots then take a look.

On a busy Saturday with the marketplace in full swing, it's easy to miss this wonderful statue. If you stand in the right place you can get a photo without the buildings in the background too.

Given the ambience of its surroundings, this – a little surprisingly – is a statue that one might easily miss if the square happens to be busy. It’s interesting, but nothing special – although the square itself is a reasonable place to stop if you’re...More

It's a statue and it happens to be one of the lesser dominating features of the square. With all the ancient architecture and a castle and cathedral a stones throw away it can get lost and pretty much missed.

Boring statue in the market place. I live nearby and have passed it 100s of times and never even noticed it, so that just about sums it up for me.

Again, another statue dominating the Market square. Interesting and good for pics but unless statues and history is your thing, its just a pleasing thing on the eye and adds to the overall feel of the square.
