The Marquess of Londonderry sits astride his horse on a tall column dominating the Market Place. He fought in the Peninsula War and married a coal heiress. The statue was erected in 1861.

You can't fail to miss this imposing copper statue, in the centre of Durham's market place. The statue is of the Third Marquis of Londonderry, in a Hussar uniform, sited on an impressive sandstone pedestal. Very impressive.

This is a dominant feature of the old town square. I don't really see that it would be a tourist attraction though, but maybe I'm not in tune with what people want to see in a place like Durham!
