Went to this museum to see the silver swan and was not disappointed. We spent the whole day looking at the many paintings and exhibits and saw the swan working at 2 o’clock. Had a brief but informative tour and then went around again on...More

So impressive as you turn into the gates, you’ll think a French Chateau has been dropped into County Durham. Make sure you’re there for the 2pm Swan automaton demonstration; 245 years old and still working perfectly.

We visited this museum for a short walk from Barnard Castle centre with our dog. We knew the dog couldn’t go in but wanted to get a close up view. We walked the dog round the woodland and gardens and they are museum grounds really...More

Very unusual museum - the building is really part of the exhibit, being purpose built for the collections it houses. Great fashion department, though would have liked to see more of this! Much of the exhibits seem rococo or baroque in style, and there's lots...More

Purpose built museum which in itself is unusual; to set it not in a town/city centre is equally unusual. Joined a guided one hour tour which was very worthwhile as it gave us an explanation of the history of the museum and pointed out some...More

Too much to see in one day, so we spent two! What a rich variety of objects and paintings. Try and be there at 2pm to see the silver swan automaton working, amazing for its age.

Yes all floors are accessible by the lift. The disabled access door is on the east side of the building, and you can also borrow manual wheelchairs from the reception. (Might need to ring in advance to check availability).
