If you happen to be in the immediate area, the eponymous castle (surprisingly hidden away near the town centre) is worth calling into, but is otherwise not worth too much effort to visit. Its sensory garden– part funded by the EU regional development fund –...More

Love this castle! It looks so pretty lit up and colour changing on a night. It really is the heart of the area. The grounds are pretty, well-maintained and spacious. Maybe wouldn't recommend with children of toddler age as theres so many different levels, drops...More

Lovely place, spent a lovely couple hours wondering the ruins and exploring. Lots of information on the castles history, well displayed. Some fabulous views and nice place just to sit and while away the time.

A fascinating place to explore with all the classic ingredients: stairs and towers and grassy banks plus wonderful views of the river. No parking immediately close at hand but try combining it with a half day at the Bowes Museum and park there before walking...More

It took us a while to find our way in, but it was worth it. Good sized site with a huge moat, and lovely views over the town and river. Lots of shops to visit outside the Castle.

Well worth a visit. Clearly shows the defence systems of a castle. Signage very good - easy to read and understand. Children as well as adults were clearly benefitting from their visit.

Indeed it is a lovely place. However to someone who lives in a tropical country sunny all year long, when you go to BC in winter time, when it is raining, dark, short days, it is very different. ;)
