The splendid Great Hall of Oakham Castle is one of the finest Norman Halls in England. The Hall is best known for its collection of enormous commemorative Horseshoes donated by members of the Royal Family and Peers of the Realm. It is also decorated with a range of 12th century sculptures. The grounds of the Castle are a peaceful oasis in the centre of Oakham. Following extensive refurbishments, the Castle now features improved facilities and activities for families.

Tucked away behind the market square of the Historic town of Oakham, you come to the castle - a warm stone building in grounds that have - and still are - being restored to their original past. The castle has been renovated insideand houses the...More

We arrived to be denied access as a wedding was due to take place in 20 mins time. Guest obviously not happy to see us there so visit spoiled. Smaller than expected (as seemed from the outside). Guess the horseshoes biggest draw.

Well worth a look into the unusual facts about this castle and the exhibits inside. Very helpful staff and good parking. Nice grounds for a walk around or just to sit and relax. In the centre of the town.

Very unique history. Very knowledgeable staff. Great grounds right at the edge of town. Loved seeing who brought horseshoes for the wall. Worth a visit.

This ancient hall - its not really a castle - served as a legal court until very recently. It has an ancient custom of VIP visitors bringing an engraved horseshoe. So memories of many famous people adorn the wall - all recent monarchs for example....More

What a find! A brilliant & informative afternoon. A most interesting thing was seeing all the horseshoes hung on the wall. The oldest I think was from Edward IV. The guide was extremely knowledgeable & friendly. A highlight for us was that there was an...More

This is nithing like you expect from the name, it is essentially a building within a fortified structure akin to a great hall. It is a crown court, as Rutland needs one as a county in its own right. It’s biggest claim to fame are...More
