About
Come and see how Lord & Lady Bearsted made Upton House and Gardens the perfect country retreat for their family in the 1930s. You can also discover Lord Bearsted's famous art collection including works by Bosch, Stubbs and Canaletto. We have a stunning collection of porcelain too; so if you are visiting us for the first time you may wish to expect your visit to the house to last a minimum of an hour. Viewings of the house available on a first come first served basis from 11:00 with last entry to the house at 14:50 before closing at 15:30; the gardens, shop and cafe close at 17:00. Please bear in mind that the car park is 300 yards from the house. On weekdays you don’t need to pre-book your visit. At busier times, like weekends and school holidays, booking is recommended to guarantee entry.

Beautiful gardens and interesting house
Jun 2021
We spent some time in the beautiful gardens part of which is in a steep hillside. We had a light lunch in the restaurant as well as coffees and tea. We toured the house listening to the well informed guides and learning about the family who lived there.

Disappointing
Jun 2021
Upstairs closed due to COVID rules on visitors using the staircase - ridiculous over reaction, dining room closed due to staff shortages, parts of the famous herbaceous border look like a jungle, and of the five men’s toilets only one open again due to COVID hence large queues!
All in all a disappointing day entirely created by the management of this property.

Lovely house and gardens
Jun 2021 • Family
Visited for the first time today with our toddler. Not particularly pushchair friendly as quite hilly and a lot of steps however that’s just how the house was built so I can’t fault that! Beautiful house and gardens, well kept from what we saw, we decided against going down to the Mirror Pool because we had a buggy with us and weren’t sure how we’d manage navigating down there. I do wish the big drop at the back of the house was a bit better signposted as it is very high. The car park is nice and big, plenty of parking, easy to get to, we sat outside in the cafe and there was plenty of seating too. The staff were very friendly, especially the man at the entrance who showed us exactly where to go, and also thanked us for choosing to visit Upton House. We didn’t go in the main house as there was such a big queue to get in and were told it gets very hot in there so we left it. I prefer other NT’s but we will definitely be back!

For the Art Alone.
May 2021
Upton House has a lot of story to it, which the staff was generous to share. Once you crack into the story, the characters come to life in fascinating ways. The art is impressive and displayed well. Although, many of the pieces are without placards or descriptors. The caretakers should attend to that. Every piece should have information nearby. When we visited the upstairs was closed and that was unfortunate, but the rest of the house was open and well cared for and very interesting. This is not a whole day kind of a place, just an hour, maybe two the most, but lovely and worth seeing for the art alone.

Pleasant wander through the grounds and agrden
Mar 2021
We haven’t visited this property for some time so during these strange covid times decided to have a wander around the gardens/grounds. As we usually only visit National Trust properties to see the houses we have been pleasantly surprised at how impressive some of the gardens and walks are. This is certainly the case with this property as the walk down to The Mirror Lake, through the trees, was a pleasant surprise. The walled kitchen garden is quite impressive as it slopes down to the lake. A mass of snowdrops was out either side of the pathways when we walked through the grounds by the lake. Following our walk, we dropped into the cafe for a takeaway coffee and cakes which were well received. Well worth a visit.

Very average but worth an hour at most.
May 2021 • Couples
I am glad I am a National trust member because I would have begrudged paying the admission fee earlier today.
The best part was the woodland walk on the return to the car park.
The staff as always were excellent and friendly too.
Sadly the house, due to covid restrictions, was not open so we only had the garden to see.
The gardens took us exactly 50 minutes to lap at a slow pace and the garden was a real disappointment.
I am giving 3 circles/ average as I can only put it down to covid that the gardens looked as poor as they did.
Not a patch on other gardens we have visited I'm afraid and with regret we will not be revisiting.
A nice shop as well as a coffee shop are on site and there is a large free car park too.

Attractive house with steep but pretty gardens.
Apr 2021
Upton house is a very attractive medium-sized stately home built from the honey coloured stone typical of this area.
The gardens are also medium-sized - not as vast as a Blenheim or Waddesden but large enough to spend an hour or so wandering around. They are unusual in that, beyond the large, tulip-fringed lawn at the back of the house, the ground falls away sharply to a large rectangular pond at the bottom. Between the two sits a vertiginous walled garden containing vegetable plots and, to either side, wooded slopes with mature evergreens and an undergrowth of ivy and wildflowers. To one side is a peaceful orchard.
It is an attractive garden and, I suspect, will look at its best in the summer.
People with mobility issues may want to consider the fact that much of it sits on a steep slope.
I ate a snack meal at the friendly cafe, next to the house proper. I had a good ham and pickle sandwich, a delicious sausage roll, just out of the oven and a very decent cup of tea.
Well worth a visit.
