Charming gatehouse of a castle which was once besieged during the English Civil War. No access inside the actual building, but the foundations of the main castle still remain. Superb views of the surrounding area.

Beautiful Monday morning dog walk was finished of nicely with a fab breakfast in the dog friendly Donnington Castle pub. Dogs are restricted to a certain area inside but this is still great for dog owners. The pub is adjacent to the cricket ground in...More

They are impressive towers, but are ruins - not to be mistaken for a castle. In reading recommendations we took our picnic with us. Fantastic views and perfect spot to recharge.

We drove up from Newbury via a single track road that has speed ramps every 30 metres. Lots of dog walkers parked in the small car park at the bottom of the hill who were using the various paths around the castle. The grass around...More

The castle may have been impressive at some point in time but now, there’s not much to see. Not worth a detour.

It is worth a look if only for the views and the exercise of climbing the rough path to the remains of the Keep, which you are barred from entering. It is not thought evoking and certainly not tranquil with the constant hum of traffic...More

I used to come to Donnington Castle as a child. Our family would while away many an hour enjoying a picnic amidst the castle ruins. Today, I returned to Donnington Castle, having not visisted in years. It was a trip down memory lane. Up a...More

The striking 13th century castle ruin is a grade 1 listed site and has lovely views around of the surrounding countryside. The car park at the bottom of the hill is large and free. But apart from that, there's not much else. The paths were...More

We live less than 10 minutes away and had never been here before. It has great views and we walked from the bottom so is quite a walk but in the spring sun was a lovely pleasant walk passing the baby lambs. There is nothing...More

There's not much left of Donnington Castle other than the surrounding walls and the main gate, but it's still an impressive sight. You cannot go into the surviving tower but you're free to roam around the rest of the ruins and it's quite common for...More
