This is a well maintained and interesting sight to view the night sky. However, it could do with having someone on sight everyday to escort the spontaneous visitor around the observatory.

Were delighted to find we had arrived in Sidmouth in time for the observatory's weekly open afternoon. My Dad used to work at the planetarium in Liverpool so it was right up his street. Got a deal on a family ticket (£20 I think); the...More

We visited the observatory and had an excellent tour of the facilities, and a presentation of the pictures taken. Unfortunately we didn't get to look through a telescope.

Lovely site, great history, but the guides were not very good, talking to themselves rather than to their audience. The afternoon tours do not cater to children.

Lovely and informative afternoon staffed by committed enthusiastic volunteers. Very interesting. A little hard work for young children- but my seven year old still enjoyed the lecture, the planetarium and one of the telescopes.

Really great evening at Norman Lockyer Observatory with very knowledgable volunteers showing us around. Unfortunately, one of the telescopes was having it's mechanics updated which meant we couldn't actually look through the telescopes and that was very disappointing - if this is a draw for...More

The NL Observatory is set on a hill above Sidmouth and although you can walk to it (a stiff climb from the town) there is a big, free car park. As well as the vintage telescopes in their domed housings you can see meteor tracking...More
