Big crypt with lots of caskets, including one for Maria Theresa that is big enough to hold several people. Franz Joseph’s was far more modest, probably a reflection of the changed circumstances of the empire on the cusp of being broken apart after the end...More

Beautiful site filled with intricate sarcophagi of several royal family members. It's definitely worth the visit and price is not unreasonable. You get a moment away from the heat as well if you are visiting during the summer. If you are really interested in the...More

The entrance to the crypt is separate from the church and there is a small charge. This has been the principal burial place for the Habsburgs since 1633. It contains the bodies of 145 Habsburgs, plus urns containing the hearts or cremated remains of five...More

At first you get confused. The sarcofags seem to be somehow in odd order. But with the booklet (also in English) and the info signs (in German) you quickly reach the flow to who-was-who and what they did in their lifetime. After the visit you...More

Visited before, but wanted to return as it’s really interesting. They have signs up saying no flash photography, and to be quiet. So imagine my dismay when a noisy tour group with cameras flashing started round, blocking up the route round. I returned to the...More

The burial site of the Habsburg emperors is quite sober but impressive. One of the buried habsburgers can also be found at a burial site in Madrid. There however it is just his hart here lies his body

This place is really somber and impressive. It is really unique to see the final resting place of Franz Joseph, of Sissi, of the last empress.

The crypt is a quick visit and a good closing part of visiting the sites of Austria especially after going to Schoenberg palace

Worth visiting. You should know something about Habsburgs or have an audio guide! It is allowed to bring flowers or messages on paper and lay them in front of sarcophagus, usually of Empress Sissi. People love her story.
