The city itself of Salzburg is a nightmare to me. Packed with tourists from shoulder to shoulder, yet the old city offers very few things to visit. However, a visit to the Festung fortress is a must trip. Take the funicular to go up, but...More

This is a great thing to visit when in Salzburg. The fortress will require a lot of walking, so bringing a water bottle is not a bad idea. An hour before closing is the best time to go, because there are not large crowds of...More

I first saw this Fortress in the background whilst watching The Sound of Music as a little girl, so obviously when in Salzburg we took the opportunity. Outstanding views of Salzburg from the top - brilliant photo opp. Take the cable car up the hill...More

Only a minute or two on the funicular railway to access the most amazing views of Salzburg. The museum has some interesting displays and is worth a look around. Ask for senior ticket if relevant as it’s not advertised on the price list and is...More

This is am amazing fortress that became a castle, mostly from 12th century onwards. When you are inside, it feels like a walled city in itself - really great way to spend a few hours at least. There are also a couple decent exhibitions on...More

Don't take the walking path up unless you're an Army Ranger. Spend a few Euros and take the funicular. The Fortress is surprisingly large and the Austrian have stuffed it full of restaurant an gift shops, few vestiges of castle or fortress life. Looks like...More

Not as far as I know. FYI - the walk up to the fortress can be quite steep; best not to bring it up and leave at the hotel / station
