Spectacular castle ruin and if you climb the towers they offer lovely views across the harbour and the old town. Well worth a wander round.

This place offers lovely views across the harbour and the old town with lots of steps to different levels with plenty to explore. It doesn't take very long to go around but is very good value at under £1 per person based on the current exchange rate. There are remedial works ongoing too which will open up other areas in the future.

We were a group of travellers from Canada, and visited this attraction while on a day trip to Famagusta. This castle is professed to be the inspiration for Shakespeare's Othello. We could not gain admittance, but stood at the walkways at the walled city. Incredible scenic views of the harbour from our viewing spot.

Access to this is very easy and only a short strole from the old town centre. Quite easy to climb with safe steps. If you have reached this you will have read the history at least in part. The views from the top over the old town are one of the best - look at all the derelict churches. Views over the harbour and North towards Salamis and Karpas are good in clear weather. Southwards you can see into the derelict secure zone with buildings in quite a forlorn state. Well worth the visit.

You have to visit the old part of the city/museum/cathedral/city walls/bazaars.....interesting! You can do this on your own but I would suggest to join a group or take a guide so not to miss the antique tresures of this famous city.

Impressive castle built into the Old City walls with gorgeous courtyard. The walls of the castle are enormous.

There is plenty to see and experience at this castle. It even inspire Shakespeare for his play. The courtyard is impressive. The tower is dominant. Part of the castle is being renovated with the help of funds from the EU (generous, given that the northern Turkish part of Cyprus is not in the EU. It even has views of the ghost city - Kapeli Maras which got left behind as part of the resolution in the 1970's.

You enter through a small wooden gate in the outer wall and nothing prepares you for the scale of the walls surrounding the courtyard that you are in.
Well documented with boards in English as you go round and some good views from the top.
