We made reservations for transportation to arrive here in Heimaey through Grayline Tours-- they arranged the shuttle bus ride and ferry ride to connect with Viking Tours-- which included a boat cruise around the island and a Natural History Bus Tour after lunch.
Get up close and personal with puffins. I label the place, all things puffin but fish is also what's happening. We had some of the best meals of our trip here. The bakery is awesome, the volcano museum is first rate, and the people are...More
We visited the westman islands on the weekend of a large festival (pjodhatio) which apparently is the worst weekend for visitors - about 10% of the entire population of Iceland goes to the westman islands this weekend. After missing our first boat from Landeyhofn (we...More
Most tourists miss the gorgeous Westman Islands! The flight is a scenic short flight from the city airport and I was met by a local host who gave a great puffin tour and overview of local history around Heimey. I picked my own restaurant from...More
Eyja Tours of Volcano and Puppins on Westman Islands led by it's owner Eppi was the best tour I have taken. Eppi grew up on the islands and is a passionate story teller. He told us his grandfather fed his sheep bread and donuts- otherwise...More
The ferry is punctual and reasonably priced and has full facilities on board, including a decent cafe. The crossing takes 35 minutes and is scenic itself. We booked by smart phone the night before , travelling as foot passengers ( you really don't need a...More
One of the greatest places I've ever been to. So much to see and experience. This could well become the next big thing to do in Iceland. Go and climb a volcano when you are there. See the puffins. Go on the boat trip. That's...More
My daughter and I visited the islands for a day during our visit to Iceland. We wish we had more time. We hiked along the coast to the puffin colony. It was an easy and beautiful hike. If we had more time we would have...More
My DW and I did a 12-Day Self-Drive tour in June-July 2015 and one of the highlights was to visit Westman Islands for one day to watch puffin birds. We booked the tour quite a few months ahead, but procrastinated on booking the ferry. The...More

If you are driving, it may be a great idea to stay overnight otherwise a day trip from Reyjkavik is doable. The town is very quiet, no traffic jams, crowds, or stoplights. There is so much history in the town with the volcanic eruptions that have nearly destroyed a good portion of the island. Interesting to learn about the survivors of this island and how they have rebuilt their lives.
Don't miss visiting the windiest spot on the island where the puffins are! Such a sight from the hut windows along side the sheep that graze on the hillside.
There is actually so much you can do and enjoy on Westman Islands. The number one regret travellers have after visiting the Westman Islands is not to have spent enough time there. So if you have some time to spare... More

But in regards to outdoor activites you should check out the boat tours that operate on Westman Islands. I can also suggest hiking Eldfell the Volcano, there are also other mountains you can hike there. If you like horse riding then there is Lyngfell Stable who has a great horse riding tour.
If you play golf then we have an amazing golf course.

I did it with my son this summer. ABSOLUTELY worth the hike. You need to be reasonably fit as it is quite steep but the climb does not last long. If it is a clear day then the view from the top is spectacular and moreover the volcano is STILL warm at the summit from the 1973 eruption! Unforgettable experience.
