If you're visiting Luleå during winter and the weather is good, this is a must-do. Take a walk, a spark or ice skates from Södra Hamn to Gråsjälören or go from harbor to harbor.

First time I have been here in Lulea, Sweden. We tried ice tracking, it is amazing. It is good to walk around on the frozen lake.

Skating here was the main purpose of our visit to Luleå this time and it didn't disappoint. The track was very well plowed and very wide so there was enough space for everyone. Amazing views around the city and just an unforgettable experience.

For the ones that like to be outdoors and enjoy any type of ice activities this is the place to go. The ice is very well taken care of and the experience is just amazing.

Walk over the frozen sea and view Lulea from the seaside. Great experience and one of the highlights in Lulea in winter.

We walked, sledged and run on the Isbanan and it felt like we were teens again. It is something extraordinary and funny to do!

Late February but the weather was very mild with plus Celsius degrees. Nevertheless it was a great experience on the ice (Luleå älv) and get a “spark”. If you find one you can use it for free.
There was an iceskating race on our visit too

We actually started in Södra Hamn (by the old crane), rather than Norra Hamn but it all connects. As others have said there are kick sledges you can borrow - it's best to get one the right size if you're going any distance. We visited twice, once as the sun was going down and then the next morning. In both cases it was glorious but very cold at below -20C. By our second visit they had cleared the ice tracks so it was perfect for kick-sledging. Next to the ice track was a snow track which was easy to walk on. As we could only find one suitable sledge we took turns. We walked/sledged out to the island where there is a café in the weekends – about 1.5km. When we visited there were lots of cars parked on the ice and braziers burning. It turned out they were launching a new Volvo – the V60 - and were expecting journalists from all over the world. We saw one test driving on the ice some distance away, skidding all over.
We got cold on our return but we’d had great fun. Not something we can do at home!

Never walked on ice covered sea water before, didn’t know this was here but great!! Free slays to use. Clearly used by locals looking to get across town quicker, many on skates.

Absolutely. In Luleå you can go kayaking, fishing, enjoy the archipelago by boat and/or rent a cabin on the islands. There's also a floating sauna you can rent. Check out the explorelulea website (use google)

Is Isbanan still frozen in late March?
Nick E
La Jolla, CA65 contributions
Late march should not be a problem, but conditions varies from year to year. This winter we had great conditions.
A good tip is to check the official isbanan website, where daily status is posted: Google "Luleå + isbanan" (only in swedish, use google translate)
Also, another good tip is to check the official Luleå website with maps and status of the icetracks for cars. If they are still open then isbanan probably also is open. Right now on April 15th, most of the these icetracks are open for traffic by car or trucks up to 12 tonnes... :)
Google "Luleå +isvägar" (only in swedish, use google translate)
Best regards

Is it just possible to skate by daylight?
Nick E
La Jolla, CA65 contributions
You can skate in the dark. Your eyes will adjust to the lights from the surrounding city. But use some caution if it's the first time; be aware of the route - where you start and where youre going. Check a map before you head out and bring a flashlite might be a good idéa.
