It is situated in the heart of the city on Vor Frue Plads next to the main building of the University of Copenhagen. The church was designed by architect Christian Frederik Hansen in the neoclassical style and was completed in 1829.The church can seat more than 1100 people and is decorated with the twelve apostles, the Risen Christ and the baptismal fount in the form of an angel holding a large scallop shell, all in Italian carrara marble. These sculptures were completed in Rome by the famous Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen. In the aisles many portraits of bishops and deans are on display.Night Church thursdays, fridays and sundays evenings offers prayer, electronica, poetry, jazz, taizé, gospel workshop and other contemporary forms all in candle-lighting. The program varies but can be checked on the website. In the Church apse there is a small museum and boutique. Below the museum, a part of the Gothic foundation is preserved, and a short movie tells the dramatic story of the tower.

Thorvaldsen’s Christus is amazing! The chapel nestled in central Copenhagen is a must see. While certainly Christian any faith can appreciate the detail, not only in the Christus but the Twelve Apostles. He carved these in Rome and they eventually maid it to this chapel....More

With my love of photography I always tend to go into Churches &Cathedrals and have therefore been in many. While it is a beautiful building I just felt like it was a bit empty and a disappointment.

This church is small and certainly does not have much that would differ from any other church, but this church is definitely very beautiful. It has a more modern feel with clean white walls and wooden and bronze fixtures ans statues. It is worth a...More

Compared with other cathedrals in this city, it's not the most exciting, but it's certainly beautiful. It feels a bit more modern than many European cathedrals, but the stark white pillars and ceiling are beautiful.

This church has a very modern feel about it as it is so crisp , bright and clean . The hanging chandeliers hang like halos and the 12 saints statues are very impressive.

I enjoyed the peace and quiet of this church. The decor is simple and elegant which makes it picturesque. The pews are quite unusual too.

This was a great way to see original work by Bertel Thorvaldsen - for free! The church itself is a clean, Nordic building and was well worth a stop of 15 minutes or so.

It only takes 5-10 minutes to visit this church but be sure to pass by this beauty! Enjoy the sculpture "Dåbens Engel" by Thorvaldsen. It is a masterpiece.
