The village provides a scenic walk into the past with a steep rock path that meanders through tiny stone houses some of which have been renovated. It is located in a remote area on the side of a mountain and offers both peace and beauty.

Anavatos is a one-of-a-kind site to visit. What must have taken place here when Greece fought from it's independence from the Ottoman Empire must have been horrendous. The village is located in a spectacular area of the island, high on a mountain with cliffs on...More

There are no inhabitants here except Smaragda! In the summer a few more people come (5-6 maybe). There is a cafe at the entrance to the village. It s nice to walk among the abandoned homes and imagine how it would have been like.

Unbelievable architecture in the top of the rocks. Only admired from the foot of the hill, but it is truly fascinating. Go there.

Visit this place if you are in Chios. The ruins and the story of it gives you the chills. We visited in winter so there was not even a cafe. Not very suitable to visit with small children since the paths are dangerous.

Breathtaking views, tragic history, where women threw themselves off the sharp, steep cliffs with their children to avoid being kidnapped.

Even when you are close enough, you are unable to undentify the village from the stone mountain. It reflects an unkown history of Greece and the slaughter of locals during the revolution of 1821 against Turkish. You would be always wonder, How the did it...More

Anavatos is really breath taking. An old settlement that is already a ghost town. One of the attractions that one should never miss.
