Near The St. Sophia's (Agia Sofia) church, there is this small place... if it was not for the sign on the street, it would be unremarkable. Picture yourself a small hole in the ground, with open access stairs. In the hole, there is - apart...More

A small church that leads to the catacomb of st John. The visit takes you back in time, since it is literaly under the city. This is part of the greater church of st Sofia, only a few meters away.

Just across the road from back side of st. Sophia church, below the street level is a fantastic, calm and cosy garden with modern church above the ancient catacomb. The church is closed in the afternoon, but the garden itself is worth stopping by.

This represents the beginning of Christianity....and is easily found across from where the Ayia Sophia church is located. Inside it is both beautiful & peaceful.

Located just across the road from Aiya Sofia, this site is easy to overlook, yet it is a place of great importance as it had been used for gatherings of Christians back in the Roman times, when Christianity was yet outlawed. From the street, you'll...More

A must see when visiting Thessaloniki. It's right beside Hagia Sophia but can be easily missed as it is 5 meters below ground. Both the church and the catacomb are well kept.

Hidden at the center of the city, next to the church of Hagia Sofia in Thessaloniki, 5 meters below the ground, lies a small garden with a church and a small catacomb dating from the roman ages. The ideal place to stop and rest for...More
