- Sand MPerth, United Kingdom733 contributionsPretty as a pictureWe went to this part of Crete during an excursion. What an absolutely beautiful place this is. No photographs do it any justice. It is a bustling town with shops galore. A shopper and tourist paradise where you can shop till you drop or eat till the cows come home. Had a fabulous time here and would definitely returnVisited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 January 2023
- Mohamed B7 contributionsEnchanting Historic Port TownChania is a charming and historic port town in the northwest of Crete that captivated us from the moment we arrived. The old town, surrounded by Venetian walls, is a maze of narrow streets filled with colorful buildings, boutiques, and tavernas. The harbor front is a bustling hub of activity, with traditional fishing boats and restaurants serving up fresh seafood. The highlight of our visit was the restored Ottoman quarter, with its beautiful architecture and quaint streets filled with shops and cafes. Overall, Chania is a must-visit destination for anyone looking for a touch of old-world charm in Crete.Visited January 2023Written 31 January 2023
- A ~Birmingham, United Kingdom27 contributionsLovely to walk around with great views and sunsetsLoved walking around here! We liked the inner harbour more as it was quieter and the restaurants were better quality and value. We also loved the Venetian Quarter by the outer harbour - such beautiful, quaint narrow streets and good restaurants and bars.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 May 2023
- CHARLESKH55Tonbridge, United Kingdom3,463 contributionsDays and nights out.My wife and myself have been here few times over the years we like the place, always something new to look at, narrow streets with houses that are being renovated the restaurants, shops the views. There’s a lot to see and do, the main bus station is a short walk from the Harbour about 15 minutes and local buses from 1866 Sq. There’s also a taxi rank.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 May 2023
- KimberlyAtlanta, Georgia168 contributionsHistorical, inexpensive, great views.Historically significant, inexpensive, and worth a peek. It was 2 euros for the over 65 crowd and 4 euros for everyone else. It is a massive structure and there are some recovered items on the lower floor although there is no explanation of the items. The best part is the open top floor with its detail and expansive views.Visited July 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 30 July 2023

You can also find several restaurants and bars for food and drinks. Throughout our stay in Crete and no matter where we went during the day, we always ended up taking a walk in the old town and the venecian harbor!Visited August 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 18 September 2023
- John BReading, United Kingdom102 contributionsGreat place to visit but beware if drivingThis place is quite something. The oldest standing lighthouse in the Mediterranean sits at the harbour entrance and you can walk right up to it along the sea wall. Plenty of boat trips to choose from, or rent a small motor boat. Cafes and restaurants line the harbour and the place has a nice buzz to it. If you are driving in, beware! It’s a tough spot to find parking and the roads are really narrow, so don’t attempt it in an SUV. That said, we loved the place and intend to go back.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 September 2023

What an incredibly scenic and charming place for a seaside stroll. We stopped at one of the waterside restaurants and enjoyed a delicious lunch overlooking the historic harbor.

Lovely spot. The whole of old town is a great tourist spot but we really enjoyed sitting on a bench In the harbour with gentle ripples of water lapping away at the pavement a couple of feet away. Grab an empty (and free) bench and just people watch and chill.

What a fantastic historic harbor! The buildings are beautiful and there are lots of little pedestrian side streets to wander--plus terrific shops and restaurants. It is such a lovely view at night as well.

I wondered if you could advise what part of Chania Old Town I should stay in. I have trawled the internet for advice, but cant quite get the answer I am looking for. Looking down on the map, there is the touristy half horseshaped area where the main eating area is, but then the Venetian old harbor down to the far right of the map also has eateries AND accommodation. I have found a nice apartment right down in the Glafkou area. Do you think that is too far out?? Thank you

The Venetian old harbour is an ideal location to stay whilst visiting beautiful Chania.
It’s not too far from everything & will be quiet as it’s away from the restaurants & bars

Hi David, a group of us are cruising on Princess Cruises in June and I'm just wondering if you may have gone on a cruise yourself and if so, where your ship docked? Anywhere near here?
Thanks in advance, Helen

Hi everyone, i have not gone on a cruise in a while, but if you plan on traveling to Chania specifically, you will stop at the Souda Port in Chania and then to get to the Venetian harbor you have to take a car or a taxi to Palia Poli as they call it in Greek. It should take about 15 Mins to get their.

Any advice on which hotels are best to stay in to get the best out of Chania and that area. Ideally I'd like a hotel near the sea for swimming but handy enough to walk round the old town etc. Thanks.

The Royal Sun is up on the hill but they have free half hourly shuttles until midnight. around 5 minutes away.
I rate this place highly because it punches above its weight. The rooms are large as is the pool and although it's priced as a 3 star hotel it's really 4 star. We paid around £50 a night

Lots of museums and stunning churches in Chania Town centre , you can get the bus there and back direct from Platanias. We are still on Crete and have suffered the same weather. If you've transport you can travel up to the monestry , which is well worth a visit it's to the west of you as you climb the peninsular.the vet amicably centre off the road into Melame is supposed to be good, though I've not been

Yes. I went in a one day trip to Santorini with SeaJets.
From the harbour of Rethymno to Santorini it takes about 3 and a half hours.
You can buy a ticket in any excursions agency.

What is the closest beach (walking distance) from the Old Venetian Harbour?... If possible, how long would the walk take and is taking a taxi suggested. Thanks in advance.

it's about 20 mins walk from the harbour, as you look at the sea, turn left past, the maritime museum, continue past the old "factory"?, then past the pool, football pitch, small harbour and café area, then you're at the beach. I did it in about 20 mins on my own, and it was worth the beer at the end.
Enjoy.

Going on a cruise ,can you get here from the ship?

Regular shuttle buses from the cruise port. 3 Euros return. Very good value. The Destination Services team on board your ship will have full details. You are likely to be dropped near to the Agora. The Old Venetian Harbour is only five to ten minutes from there. You can also take the City Sightseeing Bus which is a hop on hop off service. 15 Euros per person as at June 2015.
