Marathon is a nice day trip from Athens, hour drive there. Marathon has several places to stop and walk around to see everything, all close by each other. Markers to explain what things are, but I think you'd get more out of it if you...More

This was where about 8000 Athenian hoplites, augmented by all of the 1000 brave men from little Plataea defeated the Persians in one of history’s great surprise attacks. The Athenian dead were buried on the battlefield and a huge mound was erected over them to...More

What a stunning place to be at - walking on the battlefield felt a real honour. I’m not sure the archeological museum was worth the visit - there’s nothing much in it about the battle itself. I did it on the bus from Athens (easy...More

Was hard finding the place due to the lack of proper signage, but once there, it was definitely worth the effort. The tickets we purchased at the museum also included entry here.

I took a regional bus from Victoria Square in Athens to Marathon, which cost €3.7, and lasted from 10-11:30 a.m., including numerous stops. The battlefield and the museum are not far from each other if one can make a bee line, but unlucky tourists have...More

I traveled to Marathon mainly to see the battlefield and surrounding area. The grave of the dead Athenians is sad mainly for the lack of attention and care to this iconic site of the first defeat of the Persians. I don't think many people including...More
