The beauty of this battlefield is that it seems to be untouched my millenia. Gentle flowers and grass help you visualize the whole scenario. There is a map and trail, but the simplicity is all you need to take in the quiet historical setting. Sublime...More

Unfortunately due to time constraints we never got to visit the burial mound itself. Instead we had a quick cycle around the perimeter which allowed us to see and appreciate the mound and get some photos. Worth a visit if you are in the area...More

Was hard finding the place due to the lack of proper signage, but once there, it was definitely worth the effort. The tickets we purchased at the museum also included entry here.

I traveled to Marathon mainly to see the battlefield and surrounding area. The grave of the dead Athenians is sad mainly for the lack of attention and care to this iconic site of the first defeat of the Persians. I don't think many people including...More

Marathon is out of your way if you are visiting Athens. I would not suggest it if you are visiting Athens for just a couple of days. If you are a resident though, you definitely need to see the Museum. The exhibits include neolithic findings,...More

Marathon is a small village close to the sea, about 50km from Athens. The area was the stage of the first encounter on the Greek mainland between the Persians and the Greeks. It was the culmination of the first attempt by Persia to conquer Greece...More

We visited the Marathon battlefield and associated museum our first day in Greece. The museum is a bit tricky to find, located off the main road to Marathon which was itself a bit of a problematic journey from the airport. Signage is adequate but not...More
