Avenido do Mar, is the principle throughfare complete with restaurants bars high end shopping. There is also a major transport hub, and a number of quite random monuments and street art, that is definitely open to various levels of interpretation. The Avenido passes the cable car for Monte, en -route to the Harbour, lots to see and it is a fine walk

This is a good place for a stroll. There are some up slopes, but it is not too challenging. Gardens and views along the way. One of the hearts of the city.

This Sea Avenue stretches out 4,270 feet along the shoreline of Funchal. A brutalist giant footballer statue stands at the west end of it.

Avenida do Mar stretches between Santa Catarina Park (west) to the Funchal Cable Car (east). Nice to walk/jog leisurely along the promenade and enjoy the attractions on the sea side (marina, giant cruise ships etc.) , or walk along the sidewalk on the opposite side to enjoy shops, restaurants and the Palacio de Sao Lourenco. Nice .

This is the main road along the front of Funchal by the marina. It is a wide street but wasn't always that busy so not too loud. It is lined with trees and there were plenty of food and drink stops all the way along as well as some pretty gardens. We walked along it every day of our trip and also at night when it was all lit up.

Lovely promenade in Funchal, some building work going on building a new marina. What we were not expecting was to see groups of men openly dealing and injecting drugs, in the middle of the day in full sight. Not very pleasant hence my score.

This is the main promenade along the coast of Funchal. There are many statues, sculptures and fountains along the way. Also several cafés, restaurants and bars, but also more peaceful spots with benches amid flowers or small grassy areas to just sit and take in the views.
One day we strolled all the way from Fort Sao Tiago at one end, past the marina and walked upto Santa Catarina park, before looping back.
Only a short couple of minutes walk from the Rua Santa María. The main bus stops and the cable car terminal are also just a couple of minutes walk away, so a very central location. There are public toilets near to the main bus stops.
