Neighbourhood: Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores
A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!

    A little gem in Lisbon.
This is such a great little place -- I wish America had them. This tiny ginga bar has standing room only, and you can get the sweet cherry liqueur with or without cherries soaked in alcohol. We got them with cherries. The ginga liqueur originated in Lisbon.

Loved the drink but the cherries!!!
Had to come here and sample the local liquor. Lucky for us no queue and served quickly. 2 euros per drink. Very expertly served. He has clearly done this a lot! Drink wise it was lovely. Yes sweet but not as sickly as I thought it would be and actually rather nice. However, the cherries, OMG!!! Sharp and very strong. Next time without cherries! But a must for visiting Lisbon

Delicious and affordable Experience in Portugal
Must try while in Lisbon. If you drink alcohol, this is a quick and inexpensive experience. Opens at 10 am and there is always a crowd of people waiting for their shots of this delicious cherry liquor, with or without cherries. About $1.50 a shot, anytime of the. day. The ground is sticky from the hordes of folks trying Ginjinha. There are many of these small Gijinha shops all over Lisbon. Some offer your shot in a chocolate cup as well. Enjoy. Cheers - Saude!

    Yummy Liquor!
I stopped by here almost every night to get a shot of ginjinha before heading back to our hotel. I tried it with and without cherries and liked both, but the cherries are delicious. It’s a very sticky liquor, so don’t spill or be prepared with wet wipes!

While doing a tuk tuk tour we passed a big crowd deinking and having a lot of fun. Naturally we had to check it out. This little hole in a wall sells 2 things: water and Ginjinha, a cherry liquor. You buy a tiny shotglass and drink it while standing around on the street. The drink itself wasn’t my cup of tea (probably because it wasn’t tea 😃) but it was a really fun Experience

When researching my trip to Portugal, I read that ginjinha is popular here, which is a cherry liqueur. I happened to find this spot on Google Maps because it was right around the corner form our hotel, and had great reviews. We popped on over for a try one night after dinner at around 9:30 on a Thursday. It's a hole in the wall, so there are no seats but it was still pretty busy. The walls are lined with bottles and bottles of ginjinha. You can order it with or without a cherry, then you bring it outside to sip, and just return the glass to them afterwards. I must say that I liked it better than I thought I would, especially since I don't love cherry-flavored things. It was sweet and tart at the same time. It reminded me of cranberry or pomegranate juice (but with some alcohol in it). It's definitely a digestiv to be having after a meal because it's so sweet. Plus, I think each small glass (maybe about 1.5 shots worth) was only €2.50, which was pretty cheap. I'm sure they have these types of ginjinha bars everywhere but if you're in the area, this is a good one to stop by.

Any visit to Lisbon isn't complete unless you stop in for a sip of ginjinha cherry liquor at A Ginjinha located just off Praca do Rossio. Follow in the footsteps of Anthony Bourdain, Rick Steves, and Andrew Zimmern and make this a part of your Lisbon experience. Make sure you have one glass with the preserved cherries included and another with just the drink.

What a superb local tradition. You absolutely have to give this a try. Only 1.50 and we recommend have it with the cherries.

If you are in Lisbon, you MUST give this a shot...

An iconic experience in Lisbon, this little walk-up bar where you order a ginjinha and nothing else. It's the very sweet cherry flavored liquor that is traditional. Locals drink it any time of the day. It is very tasty and very potent. Suitable for vanilla ice cream and not much else.

Had to be done. Cheap shot of booze at 10am in the morning standing in a busy pedestrian street in a European capital. What’s not to love.

This place was packed with people coming to see where the famous Anthony Bourdain had a shot of the namesake Ginjinha, it was nice place with friendly staff and with only 1 thing on the menu it wasnt difficult to decide what to order. Take a shot and hand the glass back

First Ginjinha bar in the world. My wife and I stopped here and got a drink. Please remember there are no seats and the bar is very small. We drank our Ginja outside. Loved the cherries at the end of the drink
