The area
Neighbourhood: Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores
A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!

One of the larger obelisks in Lisbon. Nice detail and worth a visit. Quite near the Hard Rock Cafe and the train station in downtown Lisbon.

An important monument, and an obelisk, in the center of one of the biggest squares, a monument to the restoration of the Portuguese monarchy after the Spaniards left. Lots of traffic, some grand hotels, some classic restaurants, a big Metro station.

The is a 30-metre tall obelisk monument in the centre of Praca dos Restauradores. The monument is the work of António Tomás da Fonseca and was erected here in 1886 as a commemoration of Portugal's War of Restoration and independence from Spain in 1640-68.

What you see is a decorative obelisk that stands upon a plinth with bronze figures of the Angels of Victory and Independence. It is a nice monument worth spending a few minutes to enjoy when passing through or spending time around this square.

This interesting obelisk stands alone in an otherwise empty square with no fountains or landscaping nearby. For someone who knows history, the obelisk might mean something special. For the average tourist, it is not worth making a special trip to see it.

Located in the center of Praca dos Restauradores surrounded by calçada portuguesa stands this almost 100-foot-tall monument to commemorate the independence of Portugal from Spanish rule in 1640.
It celebrates all the soldiers who died during the freedom struggle.
Affixed to the pedestal are two angels representing Victory and Independence. Victory is the female facing north and Independence is male facing south. The inscriptions on the monument denote key battles and events during the War of Restoration.
