Have your friends been inside an extinct volcano ?
Aug 2021
Touristy, but deservedly so. Wandering around inside an extinct volcano is always going to be fun but the mix of greenery and different minerals makes this especially pretty. Beware the opening times - when we were there only opened at 14:30

How to get into an extinct hell.
Jan 2020
One of the most intriguing things for humanity is how to die and come back. The Greeks poetized this in their myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Christians would like to go to hell and come back and tell others. The island of Terceira presents this opportunity inexpensively. The cave Algar do Carvao is an extinct volcano. Figuratively speaking, an extinct hell. It seems like only 3 places on earth allow you to make this piquant journey. These are not the most interesting caves compared to those I have seen in Vietnam and Slovenia, but there is a different context. There's a volcano here after all. Really need to dress warmly. Even in summer, you can catch pneumonia here. Hell is cold now, not hot.

Really original and nice place. Absolutely deserves a visit. You can go with children provided that you can control them and are able to go upstairs and downstairs. Check timetable since it is constantly changing

Good for a rainy day experience
Mar 2020 • Couples
I went with my gf and we debated buying this entrance fee combined with the caves tour as well which saves you 4 Euro. Ultimately we opted to just purchase this tour, and although we didn’t do caves, I was fine with this decision. Don’t get me wrong - this was cool, but I heard the caves were anticlimactic in comparison. Perhaps buy both if doing caves first?
May want to bring a rain parka as there is a lot of moisture dripping in the caves. I wish the bottom section was open which may have resulted in a 5 rating. As you are inside, it totally makes sense to plan to do this on a rainy day

Worth a visit
Mar 2020 • Couples
Check the schedule as in off season it is not open every day and opens later in the day. Although not necessary a poncho or rain jacket is beneficial as it does drip and having weatherproofing will allow you to enjoy your visit a little more as the dripping water is chilly. A fairly easy walk up and down the steps. Does not take very long but worth a stop.

Caves
Feb 2020 • Friends
I have been to several caves over the world. This is one of the least appealing. Extreme moisture within, Moss growing near opening, water dripping from every wall and ceiling. Stalactites are minor.
Having said that if u haven’t been in a cave, go.
It’s spacious. You have to be able to do stairs , whatever number the site says. Not dangerous at all there is a railing everywhere.
And there are a limited number of things to see and do in Terciera, so if U are there for few days go.

Enjoyed the tour - amazing

It was well worth the visit - very impressive, and informative. I’d recommend a visit. We did it in under an hour including a stop for t-shirts at the souvenir counter.
