Access via a hotel only, and if that is closed?
Jul 2021
One that can be given a miss. From a distance it looks like many of the other delightful fortified hilltop villages. Sadly the castle tower is now part of a hotel that was closed. The large church next door is closed and the village in general rather than the attractive quiet appeal of others appears a little run down almost on the verge of being abandoned.

Another Great Pousada

Awesome setting in a 13th century castle. Helpful and attentive staff as usual. Clean, comfortable room. Exceptional breakfast, especially the made to order omelets. Convenient parking in front.

Pleasant afternoon walk
Oct 2020
Well-worth the short drive up to the castle and then a walk around. Some great views over Estremoz and the countryside.
Museum interesting but not exceptional

Views there over the valleys are really picturesque but historical insights are weak.

If you consider seriously to visit this place separately just only having looked at it in some tourist advertisement brochure dispensed through hotels - forget about that :) and save your money - it is not worth the money asked for any collective trips...

However, if you have an opportunity to rent a car and devote the whole day of your vacations to discover beautiful valleys and hills of Alentejo - thus, bravely include Estremoz in your route and do it after your visit to Evora (if you start that day early in the morning from Lisbon you'll have enough time to visit all these places).
When you ride through very attractive groves of cork oaks that grow just even centimetres from the pavement (you'll meet them very often on your way), you'll be able to stop at any place you wish and touch them :) - so nice.
Do not worry - the quality of roads in course of the whole route is very good; there are not any traffic jams in the morning in that direction and even at night you'll return without problems to Lisbon; and as in Estremoz as in Evora there are enough parking lots (in Estremoz keep your car close to the main tower - the designated area is big enough to encompass all).
And better use toll-free roads riding there in order to stop at nay place you'll admire - as among valleys of grape as between cork oaks.

The very castle... well, rather to be interesting for its views over valleys of Alentejo than its historical gist; some Pousada controlling the access to the main watchtower is rather a dubious decision.
From the observation deck - the whole wall could be considered as that - the vast valleys of Alentejo are revealed...
Having admired these views you could return to Lisbon with some sense of accomplishment - on your way back you'll see some very interesting places to stop for dinner :).

Elegant with incredible views...and a good restaurant
Oct 2019 • Couples
Driving up to the castle we began to see the lovely walled town of cobblestone streets. The castle sitting atop the hill became our hone for two nights and what a home it was! Lovely rooms with updated bathrooms, appropriately decorated. Ours had a little sitting room and a beautiful view of the vineyards below. The restaurant serves good regional food and a plentiful breakfast. I hope we’ll be back some day!

This is a must see. The castle is really well maintained. We stayed the night as it is a hotel also. Room was great, views amazing. Well worth it. Highly recommended.

All things inside the wall are very well conserved. The castle is impressive and the view from the tower is breathtaking.

Amazing place rich in history

Amazing place to stay at, you are right at the center of history it’s actually like staying in a museum. Great welcome at the reception, amazing breakfast, and beautiful location. Would love to come back and dine here. The place is full, so it’s always a good sign and it’s child friendly (they have a nice swimming pool too).

Stayed here in the hotel
Aug 2019 • Friends
It's amazing to stay in such an old place. The area is magnificent and the staff are lovely. Remember it's an OLD place so if you are looking for every mod con this isn't for you but if you are into a unique experience it's absolutely spectacular. It's very quiet, and beautiful. The food is good, nothing earth shattering but the wineries nearby had some of the best meals I've ever had. The food in the hotel is not so great so eat out.
