- Rose77 contributionsA gruesome bit of fun!I wasn't too sure what to expect with this museum but it sounded interesting and I was surprised by the amount of information and items in the fairly small museum. Its fascinating and also a little bit terrifying seeing all the different torture implements. The information panels were good for historical info as well as anecdotes about certain uses of the items. Certainly an eye opener and maybe not for the very squeamish as some of the displays don't hold backVisited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 25 March 2024
- Elena RBath, United Kingdom9 contributionsBetter than I expected!Im a 17 year old girl and went on my own, not expecting much to be honest after reading the reviews. I was pleasantly surprised - I managed to be in there for about an hour and it was a small, but well informed little museum. Yes, it is not like other larger museums with huge amounts of in depth info , but for what it is, I thought it was entertaining and informative (translations included + a timeline of torture through the ages..) I thought it would only show the basic , well known torture devices but there were many that I had not heard of , which was interesting. I would say 7 euros is quite expensive for a student but what can you do? It isn't a must here in Brugge but if you run out of things to do , definitely have a visit hereVisited August 2024Travelled soloWritten 10 August 2024
- AnLil930 contributionsInquisitionNot everyone’s into the dark side of history, but compared to Granada, this is tame. If you’ve seen a 1638 witch’s scale then you’ve gotten a taste of the Spanish Inquisition. Let’s not forget Deutsch Strasbourg (1349). These “instruments” travelled far & wide with the Portuguese, who made friends with Japan or Indian Mughals, and on to New France (America & Quebec)—not limited after the 1400s to Oude Steen/ “Old Stone.” They were used till almost the mid-1800s in Mexico before enslaved peoples achieved liberation—hence, Emancipation Day’s a big deal (almost 2 centuries in Canada)—where Martin Luther King dropped in for yearly celebrations; then decades later, Emancipation & desegregation happens in the U.S. Next up, capital punishment: the guillotine & electric chair. Get ready!Visited September 2024Travelled with familyWritten 7 September 2024

Visited the museum, wouldn’t really say it was a museum but more a collection of torture devices with the platoon film sound track playing in the background. Three rooms full of torture devices and descriptions. A visit doesn’t take long and as being from the UK where museums are free and this was €8 we were a bit disappointed as there’s no audio description equipment or leaflet given to you.
Absolute no for children under 12, quite gruesome (but what do you expect) and stomach turning. Sort of place that’s interesting but you ask yourself why did I come to look at this.

Hi Jamie. , sorry you did not find what you were looking for. But do you know what you looked for? The museum shows indeed the intense torture devices and practises which were used for thousands of years . All this to make you think about the extreme difficult task for those who claim the authority to practise justice for the best of their means. Apparently you moved to fast trough it to give it some serious reflections . Feel free to come over again and we will talk. Best rgds

We visited based on reviews and Time Out review. This museum is set in an old prison and underground which makes it good for a rainy day.
Apart from those two plus points, there is nothing redeeming about rooms full of torture equipment, poorly maintained exhibits, poor information boards pretending to explain how torture was used throughout the last 1000s of years, culminating and highlighting the work of Amnesty International.
Not worth the money nor the visit.

May not seem like a must do but I found all the information there very interesting. The museum covered history from the roman days up until present day and everywhere in between whilst also looking at the history within many different countries. It didn't just feature torture but also gave information on modern day capital and corporal punisment and their uses in modern day. Although not for everyone it's definitely worth a visit if this kind of history interests you or if your looking for something different. It approximately took us about 45 minutes to go around the whole museum.

Having seen many other exhibitions on the subject, it did seem a bit dull. Especially as there's a lot to read, I wish there was an audio guide for guests.
Still, it's very well done, with great wax figures to illustrate how certain torture instruments were used.
Defa good collection and quite interesting to visit.

Visited this museum whilst in Bruges. It was relatively cheap to get in (€9 per adult, my 6 year old was free). We as humans have really come up with some really horrible stuff to inflict pain on one another. That said it was really interesting and there were plenty of signs in different languages to explain what was what and who used/invented it. It’s only a small museum but plenty to see and read about for an hour or so. My 6 year old loves all things historic and was really interested in things in here, well worth a visit.

I really wanted to give this a good review. But it is pretty low key. Kids between the ages of about 10 -24 will probably love it. Smaller children will find it frightening. Older adults will find it interesting but campy. Most of the items you see are replicas and most of the information, while presented in several different languages, is basic stuff. It is also pretty repetitive and not well organized. The high point are the small segments of original walls from an ancient prison- but most of the building was destroyed. Some interesting historical stuff was mildly interesting ( fyi: most scholars reject the chastity belt as a fabrication). It cost 9 euros for adults- I would suggest 4:50 as a more appropriate price.
Parents could probably use this as a diversion for their children.

We visited this museum on a 3 day break to Bruges this week. Does what it says on the tin really, gruesome and some quite disturbing pieces from the world's history of torture and execution, so probably not for small children or the squeamish. Quite small and we got around it in roughly 30-40 minutes. I wouldn't call it a must see, but worth a visit if its raining or you have a spare hour. At 9 euros each, I felt it a little over priced.

This is a short museum with interesting yet gruesome facts about the judicial system through history. The facts and displays were clear and engaging. However I did start to feel a bit queasy towards the end.

An hour well spent! Quite small however so many props and interesting up-to date information would really recommend however would not recommend for children under age of 12 as a lot of the information is graphic and quite frightening. This is not like the child orientated tourist attraction’The London Dungeons’ etc. Would definitely revisit with friends!

This is a really interesting, quirky little museum! My partner and I always enjoy museums that are a little different and this one did not disappoint!
As you would expect, it is disturbing in places, but very informative. It doesn't take long to go round and is a very reasonable price to enter.
Would definitely recommend if you are interested in dark, but fascinating things!

Are kids (11 years old) allowed to visit the museum? From what age can kids visit? Thank you
Written 21 October 2019
Sure they are allowed.
Age: depends on the child. Most are very interested by the subject , the content of the museum is a bit scary but does not seem to have a lot of impact on youngsters. I think these days they are used to more scary things.
Written 23 October 2019
Cannot remember but it was cheap. Also I believe I got a reduction because of my older age. Museum and staff very informative but not advisable to take small children - it is frightening for them.

Het Steen, de gevangenis met de "pijnbank" was dat vroeger (16de eeuw! niet op de Burg ? Of verwar ik met "het Loove" ?

Hi approximately how long does it take to get round the museum?
Written 17 January 2017
A quick impression takes 30 minutes.
Digesting the available info on torture, law and justice will make it 30 to 45 minutes longer.
Written 17 January 2017
Agree with other comments, not for young children. Okay for teens/young adults. You would need to explain things to young children and even as a teacher, I don't know any way to do this well. Torture in any era is a terrible thing.
