    Seat of the Dutch Parliament
Binnenhof, which means internal court, is the large complex that has housed the Dutch Parliament, the so-called States General, since 1446. On one side it overlooks the lake as well as the building that houses the Mauritshuis, while on the other there is the internal courtyard. We were only able to visit the outside which is still impressive. The internal courtyard is accessed through a beautiful baroque door located next to the Mauritshuis. It has risked being demolished several times but, fortunately, it is still there to make a beautiful display.

    Binnenhof
The capital of the Netherlands is Amsterdam, but the government's parliament, government offices and royal palace are in The Hague. The Mauritshuis art museum is next door. So I walked around the pond. The Binnenhof is a very charming and lovely building. Unfortunately, we couldn't go inside because of construction works. It's wonderful that you can casually visit even when parliament is in session.

Beautiful view and good impression of the Binnenhof
During the renovation of the Binnenhof, it cannot be visited. Especially for visitors who come here once, such as tourists, very unfortunate. For this reason, a watchtower has been installed, which is free of charge. From a height of 28 meters you can still get an impression of what the Binnenhof with its historic buildings looks like. If you look to the other side, you can see far away over the city.

This is a beautiful inner square with no cars that allows you to easily imagine what the Hague was like 300-400 years ago. I visited in early february in the afternoon and there were very few people around. It is right next to the Mauritshuis museum.

The Binnenhof has been the seat of government of the Netherlands since the 13th century or even longer. The magnificent Ridderzaal (Knight’s hall) was built between 1248 and 1280 and some quite sizeable rooms below the big hall are believed to be even older. Many historical buildings were added throughout the years, e.g. the impressive hall of the senate in 1655. This believed to be the oldest government building still in use today. Despite some security measures you can just walk into the inner square of the Binnenhof and see government officials walk around.

Built in the 13th century, this is a very pretty building with a nice lake called Hofvijver at the back. The building is used for government type offices. It is one of the oldest parliament buildings in the world.

One of the attractions I set out to see.
Closed for restoration
Such a pity
You can see the imposing profile from the Hofvijver Lake side and the two entrance portals (Mauritspoort and Binnenpoort with the first courtyard.
Very little indeed.

This was the first tourist attraction we visited in The Hague. It was built up with magnificent architectures surrounded with a church in the middle. The buildings have different styles. The time during our visit was a bit dizzy and cold so there were not many tourists around. Our tour explained the history which was really interesting. We also visited the exhibition hall. This is definitely a must see place in The Hague.

It is a remarkable blast to the past in terms of architecture as well as culture. Ridder...Stands for Knights and thus the House of the order of Knights. It is a learning experience as well as a repository of your best memories and then some. If visiting anywhere near The Hague, try and make it a point to stop, see, enjoy, learn and keep. Above all, ENJOY !!

I visited the Binnenhof & Ridderzaal as part of the ProDemo English speaking tour. The Binnenhof is the complex of buildings used by the government of Netherlands. The entire Binnenhof complex isn't actually that big and very easily walkable. The courtyard has a wonderful fountain, the Fontein Graaf Willem II. The ceremonial Ridderzaal dates from the 13th century and all the restoration work is very sympathetic to the original design. Here you can also see the chair used by the King and Queen of Netherlands.

The House of Senate is the standout building of Binnenhof with it's many fine paintings and murals. You can even see the understated offices of the Prime Minister of Netherlands.

Amazing to see the inner workings of the Dutch government and place where governing happens.

These buildings are gorgeous. The lake thing in front of it is quite picturesque. They are currently being renovated but there is a cool temporary tower nearby that you can take panoramic photos from.

The square is beautiful and peaceful. I very much wanted to see the Ridderzaal (Hall of Knights). We went on the organized tour for 5 euros. We were told when we booked that the tour is in Dutch but that we would have an audio guide in English. We are experienced users of English audio guides. The reality is that the entire tour is in Dutch with only a small portion of the tour supported by the English audio guide. The film that sets up the tour of the Ridderzaal is in Dutch with "surround sound." We adjusted the volume on our English audio guide as high as possible but were unable to distinguish any English words. It was simply being bombarded with noise.

There are many sights in Amsterdam and The Hague that do an excellent job of accommodating foreign visitors. This is not one of them.
