Modern art in an unusual building being a mix of old and new
Jul 2020
We visited this fine museum in the afternoon. We had no reservations but there was space to accommodate us and we were happy to get in. The museum has a strict Covid regime and there is a route indication on the floor which you can just follow. In this way you are never going in the wrong direction and you also do not exclude any rooms with works of art. There is a elevator if you cannot take the stairs. The collection is mostly paintings with a mix of own pieces and a temporary exposition. The focus during our visit was on Eastern German painters of which a combination of modern and sometimes surrealistic paintings was shown. Also the building itself is worth the visit with the big window on top overlooking the inner city of Zwolle. In total we spent about 2,5 hours in the museum.

A very vague note at the door which is partially readable ... the museum is closed. Hotel did not know, other tourist places do not know ...

Badly communicated ...

Terrific museum
Dec 2019
What a delight! The Jeroen Krabbe exhibition was well worth seeing, but the permanent collection was full of nice surprises such as a Dufy and a Turner. Lots of great Dutch artists: Mondrian, Sluijters, israels, Toroop and some impressive work by Jan Cremer. Worth visiting the chic cafe situated in the dome, with a great view out over the whole of beautiful Zwolle. Nice museum shop too.

Nice

It is a very nice museum. The Jeroen Krabbé part was colorful. The Fundatie collection has beautiful works. The building is classic with modern touches, including the tiled egg on top.

Jeroen Krabbe
Nov 2019
We were here this time particularly for the exhibition of Jeroen Krabbe's South Sea visits and subsequent paintings. It is a shame the Museum The Fundatie lends itself for such a shameless try to copy known themes of famous artists, and so worthless!!! The name only appears to be enough for the Fundatie!

I'm not into modern paintings but this museum succeeds is creating the balance between modern art and paintings belonging to the 18 and 19 century

The building itself is the most fun

Interesting and educational, but it has a very limited collection. The special exhibitions may be of interest

Dutch modern art exhibition
Apr 2019 • Couples
Beautiful overview exhibition of Dutch modern art from the last 50 years. Till 12th May. From the end of May a new exhibition .
Of course there is more to see: a part of their own collection.
Enjoy the special architecture: a mix of neo Classic and modern architecture.

Freedom - Dutch Core Art Since 1968 - Until May 12th, 2019
Mar 2019 • Solo
The new Freedom exhibition in De Fundatie shows the 50 core Dutch modern art pieces since 1968 (in the curator's opinion, obviously). Beauty remains in the eye of the beholder, but I certainly found some objects quite stunning, such as:
- Lariam by Erik van Lieshout (about the hallucinations from the anti-Malaria drug),
- Clementine's Dream by Ferdi (soft large object),
- the large boxed clay object without title by Guido Geelen,
and of course the showpiece,
- The Unexpected Return of Blinky Palermo from the Tropics by the collective Seymour Likely.
Also some of the modern paintings are quite attractive. Overall certainly worth a visit to the Fundatie.

Majestic Exhibition: Giacometti-Chadwick - Facing Fear
Dec 2018 • Solo
The flamboyant museum director Ralph Keuning came up with the brilliant idea to combine the two sculptors Chadwick and Giacometti into one large exhibition, featuring over 150 works (that is including lots of drawings). These two artists really complement each other and although Giacometti is better known to the general public, Chadwick is perhaps the more disruptive and original sculptor of the two.

The exhibition is still combined with another special, Goldbrun by Yuri Honing and Mariecke van der Linden. Also top pieces of the regular collection such as Turners "Clouds and Water" and Jan Cremer's "Guerre Japonnaise" are on display.

The museum itself is also delightful and almost somewhat self-indulgent with its shameless dome on top of the classical building. Parking is easy in the Maagjesbolwerk garage just a few hundred meters from the museum.
