This is a nice and quiet place (no cheese market when we visited it). Nice building surrounding the market.

We took the train from Amsterdam Centraal in the morning but we didn’t leave early enough to catch the 1st show around 10:00 AM. We were able to catch the second show but the crowd was still there from the first show and it was...More

Interesting little cheese market where you can see all the wheels of cheese and the scales they use. The surrounding city of Alkmaar is also very nice and was a much quieter and quainter version of Amsterdam. Since it so easy to get to from...More

We arrived when the weather was a bit rainy, The crowd was still there however we managed a good spot to watch. Those staffs looked like having fun and same was the crowd watching on. Audiences were given opportunities to try the porter's roles. They...More

At least I thought it was funny to watch 2 porters carry a sled loaded with wheels of Gouda cheese walking as fast as they could between a square and a building, while hundreds of gawking tourists snapped pictures. It so happened we were there...More

The show, which takes place on Fridays, from April to September, in the center of the town of Marken. The show is colorful and crowded with tourists. Around the square, there are plenty of stalls selling cheese, pancakes and various souvenirs.

Even though it was the end of August and no longer the height of tourism, it was very crowded and difficult to see unless you looked at a big movie screen, you are standing quite a way behind the barricades. Perhaps it is because as...More

It makes for a fun and colorful photo. It’s very crowded, so I could only see it by holding up my phone high and snapping some pics. We passed by in the evening on another occasion, which seemed to be far less crowded.

Vers Nice cheese market in the city of Alkmaar, with extended market booths. Historical square where it will be demonstrated how cheese is sold, very nice to see.

Last here perhaps ten years ago on a honeymoon. Before then, in 1972, as a youngster. The Dutch are so friendly. Well worth your time to visit. We still have the tulip bulbs purchased from here.

Alkmaar train station is within walking distance of the Cheese Market. Best way is buy ticket at Amsterdam Centraal. Go earlyish as market closes at Noon promptly on a Friday. We went by car but had massive problem parking.

There is NO minimum purchase of Cheese at the Cheese Market. You do not have to buy cheese but you will be missing out if you don't :)
