A four paws initiative to provide a safe and comfortable environment for rescued big cats from around the world. Doing incredible work to achieve their goal the staff are knowledgeable and passionate. Antelope and ostrich roam freely, but you can only see the big cats by joining a guided tour... Well worth the price paid. Our guide, Mel, was professional, friendly and full of empathy for her charges. The sanctuary is well maintained and worth the drive on the 13km dirt road.

We had an amazing experience.

Due to Covid, we did not sleep at the lodge, but we went on a guided tour through the enclosures in the sanctuary and had lunch at the restaurant.

Staff were extremely friendly and helpful, all safety precautions were followed, the tour was lovely and informative and the food was great.

I would highly recommend this place.

One thing to be aware of is that it is a 13km dirt road before you get to the gate of the lodge, so make allowance for the slow trek of a dirt road.

FOUR PAWS has given more than 100 rescued big cats a new life at the lir sanctuary in Lionsrock. I had a wonderful time at their beautiful lodge and enjoyed the informative tours with my guide “Excellence”. He is very knowledgable and told me many stories of the rescued big cats and gave me insight into their previous and current lives. Excellence has a warm personality, is very friendly and polite, and never got tired answering all my questions. The morning hike up the mountain with a beautiful view on Lionsrock with him was also a wonderful experience. Thank you for this memorable and touching time!

This is a tough review to write. I REALLY want to like this place and give it a good rating. They try really hard to make this a memorable experience for the guests, but there were just too many things that went wrong on our visit for me to rate them higher.

Firstly the positives. The Four Paws foundation seem to be doing a wonderful job in rescuing big cats (mostly) from canned hunting farms, poorly run zoos and circuses (many in Eastern Europe). They have built many large enclosures where the animals can live a more normal - and stress free - life. The location and property is also quite nice. It's set up on a hill with great views and you get a real 'game farm' feeling being there.

But sadly, that's not sufficient for a good guest experience. When we arrived (about 7pm) our chalet had already been occupied by another guest party. So we were accommodated in a standard double room. It was a bit cramped for space given we had two children in extra beds. At dinner, the food took about 90 mins to arrive - and the food was pretty average, even by South African standards. There were other guests complaining about the service as well.

The next morning we went on the 'game drive'. Well, it's not at all a game drive per se, but rather a tour in a 4x4 of the property where you get a chance to see the animals in their enclosures. It wasn't bad, just not what we expected.

I summary, Lionsrock is worth a visit, but make sure you have realistic expectations (and don't go there for the culinary experience!) They do a wonderful job taking care of their animals. I was just hoping they would take equally good care of their guests.

Rooms are spacious, clean with nice beds and clean bedding. The food was also very nice with a large range of wines.

Mind blown by the idea to provide refuge and sanctuary to cats born in captivity. Your heart bleeds to know that the animals will never see life in the wild and that they will never hunt and kill the abundant prey roaming the sanctuary.

The scenic views are alluring and breathtaking. The high perched lodge, restaurant and bar provide spectacular views during the day and cozy red wine-filled evenings. The grilled cuisine delicious.

Would I go back? Yep. Soon.

Visited on the spur of the moment, travelling back to Johannesburg from Kiara Lodge. Excellent place, the game drive was fantastic and very reasonably priced for pensioners. It is good to see so many rescued big cats including Lions, Leopards & Tigers. Did not see the Cheetah though. It is a shame that these amazing animals need rescuing in the first place.

Definitely a great experience, we were the only client's at the time of our arrival and had quute a but of time to enjoy and experience the environment. Firstly the earliest game drive was scheduled for 15:00, yet we were accomodated by moving the drive up by two hours! We could go immediately after our meal ( a well thought out menu that covers the basics and covers them well). The only crituque I could have is that the full potential of the setup is not being accomplished- with a bit more of a marketing presence I believe their successes can be doubled at least.

Overall a superb experience

What a truly inspiring visit. This really changes my whole perspective on what animal rescue is all about. My only regret is that we did not stay overnight. The rates are very reasonable and are real value for money
