This is the must-see of the city. Here you view the city across the river. The buildings, the river, the lake all under your eyes.

Climbing up the short hill overlooking Zurich’s Limmat River is a must-do when exploring the Altstadt or Old Town. It is a perfect culmination to a couple of hours wandering around and up narrow Medieval streets. This small hill, a glacial moraine, is possibly the site of the original human settlement in the area. Following the retreat of the glacier which left this pile of debris behind, the hill was surrounded by swampland. It was an obvious and dry location to live on as well as a location easier to defend due to its elevation. Bronze Age communities were followed by Celtic settlements, which were then taken over by the Romans in the early 1st Century CE. The Romans built a fort in the 4th Century CE as a defense against Germanic tribes to the north. There are no traces of the Roman era to be seen on the hill and the public park. After the collapse of the Western Roman Empire the Carolingian and Ottonian dynasties ruled the area and build their own fortified palaces - Kaiserpfalz - on the the hill. Just as the stones of the Roman fort were used to build the Kaiserpfalz so too were the remnants of the Kaiserpfalz scavenged to build the city walls as well as houses in the old city. The oath sealing the Helvetic Constitution of 1798 took place on the Lindenhof.

This open space is kept shaded by the many namesake linden trees. We visit the park during late winter / early spring on this trip as well as another one 7-8 years before that. The first time we visit during late morning and it was a quiet place, perfect for taking in the view over the Limmat River at the rest of the city across the river. The second visit took place right around sunset and there were definitely a lot more people lined up agains the wall enjoying the sunlight and the changing colors as the setting sun bathed the city buildings in a warm glow. I could hear blue tits singing in the trees above us. It was a calm and soothing place to relax in, a stark contrast from the bustling Bahnhofstrasse nearby.

As one of the filming locations of the hit Korean series Crash Landing on You, this place offers a panoramic view of the city. Great place to stay awhile and rest up after walking around the Old Town, or maybe a great overview to start your Swiss adventure at Zurich!

Beautiful place to relax with view of the churches and the river. Also used as scene location in several TV shows. It is a steep uphill climb, but be rewarded in the end.

My spouse and I went to the top of the hill, and the views of the Limmat river and the city itself with the Grossmunster and the Graumunster are very good.

It's a bit of a steep climb to get up to this park area but the views over the Limmat River make it worthwhile. Lots of great photo opportunities as you look across to the Grossmunster and other historic buildings in the Old Town. And you do get to be up close and personal with the lovely linden trees.

One of the best part during my Zurich stay was having these morning walks through the old town to Lindenhof Hill. A perfect way to start the day with morning sunshine on the viewing platform and good views of the city.

A lovely view and pleasant break to sit and take in the city. Take note that the walk up is steep and could be hard on someone with weak knees or poor health. We were lucky that the area was quite empty around 6pm and it was a lovely cool break from the heat of the city in June. Don’t need more than 15-30 mins to enjoy the space.

Loved this spot in Zurich - great views of the city once you get to the top of the hill. An old Roman fortification. Plenty of space to relax and take in the city.
