About
Fotomuseum Winterthur is at the forefront of presenting and discussing photography and visual culture. As part of its repertoire of temporary exhibitions devoted to individual artists and group shows, the museum displays works by young photographers as well as those with an established reputation. In addition, it examines photographic phenomena in the context of new technologies and digital media, exposing them to critical scrutiny. A broad range of artistic, applied and cultural forms of photography are explored, with a primary focus on dialogue and the exchange of ideas. The institution is committed to the considered, autonomous and creative use of media. Its collection (which dates back to 1960) has helped to shape the history and narratives of photography as well as our understanding of it as a medium in all its different forms. Fotomuseum Winterthur was founded in 1993.

Worth a visit

To make it clear I am not an artist, but my wife is. I expect she would rate the place higher than I do but it is an interesting experience, not too large and manageable as a non - connoisseur. Great place for lunch too.

museum was a bit too small
Mar 2019 • Couples
We felt that the collection was a bit too small. It also depends on the temporary exhibitions whether it is worthwhile to visit.

Don't bother ....

We caught a train from Zurich to see this photography, expecting to see some of the photos from their considerable archives and some more contemporary photography. There were three exhibitions which were interesting but tiny, only a few works in each one. None from the archives that we could see. With the cost of the train from Zurich (52 CHF for two) and a bus ticket from the station in Winterthur and the entry cost (19 CHF each) my husband commented that it probably cost 1 CHF per artwork. Whilst I'm happy to be exposed to some different and challenging photography these exhibitions had something to say but were very small.
My advice is to check what's on, although we did do that, and ask how many works there are before doing a day trip. We didn't do the Sammlung so maybe that would have made it worthwhile!

looking at things from a different angle once in a while

The Winterthur foto museum offers a wide collection of contemporary photographs from Swiss and foreign artists. Depending on the exhibition, it is well worth spending a day there and afterwards reflecting and walking through the quiet quarters of Winterthur back to the train station.

There are several rooms to visit, across the street and in the main building, make sure to visit them all and have a short coffee break in the GEORGE coffee.

Sometimes you like it and sometimes...

If you like a photographic challenge you should visit this museum (actually it's two of them). The exhibitions are diverse and rarely love at first sight or at second... Thus it's more a gallery, you like it or not, you find it interesting or not. It provokes thoughts rather than inspiration to go out and take pictures. I keep coming back though. The rooms are excellent, there is space without distraction. The personnel is very friendly and helpful. The bistro is quite good and a pleasant finish to any visit.

I try get to the Museum a few times per year as their exhibitions range from the biggest stars to rising ones. The restaurant is great quality, though a bit expensive.

This is a great place and the exhibitions are interesting. Unfortunately the location is a bit off the beaten track. But there is a bus going there from the main station.

Well, I admit I am biased, being member of the Fotomuseum. As photographer, this museum offers always very good exhibitions, with various subjects and orientations a very balanced mix of styles and trends. Every exhibition is worth a visit.
