This is where St. Francis spent his time in solitude and meditation. It is a beautiful and tranquil place to wander around, and perhaps, meditate. Even on a nice warm day in late September it was VERY windy and cold this high up in the...More

To walk the grounds, hike the trails and reflect on the life of St Francis is very moving. It is easy to understand why Francis and his brothers would spend time in the caves and contemplate their calling to God. Prayerful, Beautiful!

The hermitage and surrounding trails are well-worth visiting, especially if one has some time to spend in quiet meditation. While it is possible to drive to within a short distance of the hermitage, I choose to walk up the 4km or so from Assisi which...More

If you go with a tour, the pace will impede you from understanding the tranquility that must have surrounded Francis when making his decision to serve...the rock warn bed, remoteness of the compound, the quaint chapel and its remoteness on the side of a hill...a...More

We decided to drive up to the hermitage and spend more time in the surrounding forest than on the steep climb. We got there too late as there were several groups and so instead of a place of meditation and serenity we ended up with...More

This place was a highlight on a recent holiday to Italy. We were advised to go early and when we arrived at 8am we were one of only another family there. It really was a humbling experience to reflect, think and admire the tranquility and...More

This is a long walk from Assisi which is good if you are making it a pilgrimage but I would recommend saving energy to walk through the woods and visit the tiny hermitages built by the monks. If you go on a Sunday you can...More

This is an update on a review I wrote in 2015. Eremo hasn't changed but I appreciate it more with each visit. I decided to try my stamina by taking the route along the road this time, mainly because as an over 50 woman, hiking...More

It’s powerful to think of St Francis and St Rufino and others seeking solitude, prayer and peace while in this very location. I was especially touched by the grottoes of each of these men. I’m a spiritual person and felt a true sense of the...More

The Eremo delle Carceri is situated in the hills above Assisi. A short drive up a steep hill, it is walkable, but I don't recommend it unless you are fit, especially in hot weather. We took a taxi up and they left us there and...More

It is possible if you are fairly trained. Reckon 5 km uphill from the borders of the centre of Assisi.

Opposite the entrance is a parking place. If you go before or around 10:00 in the morning, it won't be to bussy and without busses. May God bless you. Felix van Hulsen.

I don't remember exactly. I think it was about 5 euros per person for a shared cab.
