Even for 30 minutes only it is something not to be missed
Aug 2021 • Couples
10 minutes by car from Cortona, is definitely worth a visit. Even short one. I am not religious but the place has something really unique. Amazing the merge with nature and the feeling of peace and calm.

The charm of the site is powerful, but it's more environmental than strictly architectural.
Oct 2020
As is often the case with Franciscan places, this monastery stands in a secluded site, rich in landscape values. The sensitivity of Francis of Assisi to all aspects of nature is well known: according to some, this sensitivity makes him a precursor of modern environmentalism, and in any case it makes him perhaps the only character in Christian hagiography who is also significant for other religions.
In this case, the choice of the site for the construction of the monastic settlement is not due to some followers of Francis, but to Francis himself. In fact it is proven that he founded this building in the remote year 1211, on land donated to him by a follower residing in Cortona, Guido Vagnotelli.
Francesco's cell - as usual narrow and very poor - is still in its original position, and around it new buildings have progressively been added, built by local sandstone, which today seamlessly cover the right side of a gorge. At the bottom of the gorge, on a bed of living rock, the torrent flows (nevertheless it was almost dry when we visited the site).
The charm of the site is powerful, but it's more environmental than strictly architectural. Nonetheless, this is an attraction worth a detour if you are in Cortona.

A Trip Back in Time
Oct 2019
From the moment you crest the hill and see the celle, it's like being whisked back in time! Absolutely gorgeous and oh so quiet!

Lovely and serene place. Wonderful walk from Cortona
Oct 2019 • Solo
It is a lovely sanctuary nestled on the hillside. Great to sit and admire the scenery. It is not very crowded generally, and most visitors are quiet and respectful. It is an enjoyable walk from Cortona if you have the time. Nearby you can spend more time walking in the woods on a trail that is well marked.

I highly recommend it.

St. Francis of Assisi's Second Home

A very peaceful and tranquil place where St. Francis spent time meditating and reflecting. Well worth the visit if you are in Cortona.

Nice place... but limited things to do
Aug 2019
Had a nice atmosphere (although we are not religious and there was an event going on so we felt a little out of place), nice location and quite tranquil (except the parking). But not a great deal to see.

Saint Frances called this monastery home
Jul 2019
Outside of Cortona this ancient monastery is well worth a visit. You can see the small cell that St Frances used and explore the beautiful setting. Was not al all busy when we visited whereas Cortona was very crowded

Another mystical place of Francis
Aug 2019 • Solo
Like Greccio this place is dramatically set in a quiet valley on a slope somewhere outside the touristic town of Cortona. Here little people wander around and sometimes you will have the place for yourself. Take in the amazing atmosphere. You cannot enter many of the buildings, but somehow this adds to the mystic. I loved it!

One week in Cortona
May 2019 • Couples
I would not miss this mission if I were near Cortona. We stayed for a week there and what a marvelous hike it was to this ancient monastery. Saint Francis of a sissy is said to have frequented this site often. In fact he built it originally in the 1200s.

Peace and tranquility at its best
Apr 2019 • Friends
4 of us visited the monastery and cell and grounds. Felt very much at ease with the beautiful buildings set in the little ravine. Flabbergasted by the waterfall and use of the natural bedrock pools each with a different use for swimming, bathing and washing clothes. The grounds were peaceful. carpark at the entrance so easy walk. Worth the one hour visit. Very close to Cortona along windy narrow roads.
