The elephant and the beauty
Aug 2020
The square is very typical for Sicily, all noisy and beautiful, with impressive monuments all around. But none is quite like the black elephant carved in lava.

A Place To Spend A Little Time Watching The World Go By
Oct 2020 • Couples
A nice Piazza to the front of the Duomo with cafès and restaurants to two sides.
A great place to watch Catanian life pass by from Brides using its features as a backdrop to their wedding pictures, locals stopping to chat, the evening "passegata" and, in our case, the circus that is "il giro d'Italia" setting up shop for the next days stage

Peaceful
Sep 2020
Although we didnt stay for long, the cathedral was a peaceful place to visit and had plenty of seating for those wishing to pray - these were spaced appropriately for Covid.

Well worth the time. A beautiful spot in Catania. Central to everything and where everything seems to happen

A very beautiful piazza!
Aug 2020 • Friends
Piazza Duomo di Catania is the center of Catania. You can find numerous cafes to enjoy your coffee. You will admire the elephant strocture too (symbol of Catania). The main street that starts from Piazza Duomo has the majority of the shops, cafes and restaurants to enjoy your stay in Catania!

A beautiful area to walk around and explore. The cathedral is stunning. Pretty much everything in Catania is beautiful though. Such old architecture and history

Heart of Catania
Feb 2020
Don' take the little tour train. Its loud and boneshaker on those cobble stones. Plenty of eating places nearby. The elephant in the fountain is the symbol of Catania.

Just like in Rome, but in one place.
Jul 2019
Catania has not preserved many attractions, which is why it is not very popular with tourists. This was caused by earthquakes. Especially the famous earthquake of 1693, which destroyed the Noto valley and Catania in addition. It was this earthquake that destroyed the Norman Cathedral in the square. This Cathedral was built at one time on the site of the Roman baths of Aquiliane. Their remains can still be seen under the Cathedral square. During this earthquake, more than 7,000 parishioners were killed. They gathered in the Church for a joint prayer, but the walls and vault couldn`t stand it and buried the God-fearing citizens of Catania under their rubble. In 1711, the Cathedral was once again restored. This time it was designed by Giovanni Battista Vaccarini. Naturally, this time it is in the Baroque style. When looking at the facade of Sant'Agata, a sense of deja vu can occur. This is no accident. Vaccarini was inspired by the Church of Sant'Agnese in Agone in Rome. He also put his hand to the symbol of Catania "U Liotru", a statue made of lava stone with the image of an elephant. The elephant is crowned with an obelisk located in the center of the marble fountain. You also saw this in Rome. Remember the fountain of Minerva by the great Bernini to the left of the Pantheon& The feeling that you are in Rome continues at the fountain of Amenano. No, this is not the Trevi, but tourists throw coins in it like in Trevi. The elephant Palace, where the town Hall is now located on the North side opposite the fountain. Beautiful lighting includes it harmoniously in the Baroque ensemble of the Cathedral square.

On a lovely square
Mar 2020 • Couples

To be honest it's not the most overwhelming cathedral I've ever visited!

But if you're in Catania do look at the outside and pop in if it's open.
