This is one of those places that you stumble upon and it is a surprise. This an outdoor area with what are crypts. They are done in fanciful gothic. Before I actually knew what they were, I was enthralled by the beauty and delicate detail....More

I used the word impressive a lot in Verona as everywhere there is amazing architecture and awesome stonework to look at - often with little cafes next to it which you can linger I and enjoy the area, as there was here.

We walked past the Arca quite a few times when we were exploring the city, the stone work is stunning!

The history and intrigue of this place is amazing. You need a good guide to tell you the stories. Fortunately, we had an excellent one, Christina.

It's worth seeing if you're in Verona. Again, it sits above street level so you can't get right up to it but it certainly is a work of art.

There are some information boards, some in English, that give details about the family and tombs. Great examples of Gothic funerary art. The church and cemetery stand just northeast of Piazza dei Signori in the Old Town a short distance from Dante's statue.

1 Euro, a small price to pay to see these old and interesting tombs of the Scaligeri family. Recommended.

The final resting place of Cangrande I (1291-1329), who is known as Big Dog, is the sole tomb in his powerful Scaligeri family's cemetery that is not freestanding. It was impossible to miss when we arrived at the large fenced-in burial plot by tiny Santa...More
