Neighbourhood: Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.

I spent several days in Venice in November 2019. One specific souvenir that a family member asked for was a Venetian mask. Now you would think that would be an easy find IN VENICE! But frankly most of the masks I saw in shops around town were either low quality, poor craftsmanship or plastic junk made in China.

I was starting to get a little discouraged when I stumbled across Max’s shop. Tucked away in Campo San Marina it seems a world away from the crowded tourist areas and cheesy souvenir shops in other parts of town, but is actually only about a 5-10 minute walk from the Rialto Bridge. What a great find!

Inside his shop, Max was working away steadily, but stopped to show me around his studio and discuss his art. He has many hand-painted masks, but also paintings, sculptures and other art for sale. Needless to say, I found exactly what I was looking for and would highly recommend that you seek out Max Studio when you are in Venice.

After a long stroll through a truely beautyful Venice but in the middle of plastic masks, take away food and all sorts of low cost products, I finally discovered this shop... true paper machè venitian masks, and a lot of other handmade interesting things. What I mostly loved - and bought - were differently sized oil paintings. Haven't found something like this in town...highly recommended!

Passed by this shop on a stroll of Venice and found myself drawn back two more times...bought a work of art that I protected during a month-long journey and multi-flight home. It is now displayed in our library and makes me happy each time I see it.

Easy to find Max’s new location in a corner of Campo San Marina, just a short walk from Rialto Bridge! We added to our “Canova Collection” a new impressionistic view in pastel colors of a quiet, small typical Venetian bridge. His work has an intimate view of what can be crowded city. Seems like this is a must stop each time we visit Venice. Friendly as ever, Max posed for a picture with me.

We've visited Venice several times and always pop in to see Max's art. He's usually quietly at work enjoying jazz music.

We proudly display several photos, paintings, and masks made by Max in our home.

Two years ago we stumbled across this little shop/gallery as were wandering through Dosoduro. It is quite close to the Frari church and the Accademia. We were fascinated by the range of delightful items in the window so stopped in for a closer examination. The owner and creative talent behind this gallery is Max Canova and he is a joy to visit with. The selection on sale changes as his imagination directs so it is always different. We purchased a beautiful life size male torso made completely of masks in addition to a few smaller items. Max gave us a price we were comfortable with, and shipped it back home for us. That was in 2015. Last September, we returned to the gallery to find Max just as amiable as ever and we once again enjoyed the gallery. His offerings are eclectic, ever changing, and beautifully made. Recommended!

We stumbled upon this store on our way to the Galleria dell'Accademia. It is a small store, but even from the windows, you can see the talent of this amazing artist, Max Canova. He makes everything himself. He has oil painting, sculptures, photographs, paper mache masks, pop-up post cards and even magnets. He also ships his artwork worldwide. From the moment you lay your eyes upon his artwork you can see the reason his doors has been open for over 36 years. After all, this is a moment to purchase something unique from a Venetian with a passion.
