- KHLondon, United Kingdom676 contributionsThe contrast between the Izu-like terrain and the colorful housesI visited in the winter, which is the off-season. At this time, there is no Cinque Terre Express (a local train), so you can use a regular train and save a little on train fares. The terrain is mountainous and you could easily say "this is the Izu coast," but the contrast with the colorful houses was beautiful.Visited February 2024Travelled soloWritten 25 February 2024
- Giorgio TCrema, Italy804 contributionsIconic port areaArriving by train, we first went up to the ruins of the castle (which seems absurd to us to charge) and then went down until we reached the church. We then walked to the port via the main street. A beautiful panorama partly disfigured by a construction site near one of the highest buildings. A great shame is the closure of the path that leads to Manarola in 20 minutes, which has been under maintenance for years.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 May 2024
- Jake CGreater Manchester, United Kingdom725 contributionsStunningYes, Riomaggiore is busy with tourists as some reviews have suggested, but it is not unbearable. If you want to see vintage Italy, this place is it. Riomaggiore is one of the five towns of the Cinque Terre National Park. It is nestled into the coastline with fantastic unspoilt buildings and great views of the sea. The town itself feels narrow and compact, but is littered with bars , restaurants and takeaway pizza and focaccia vendors. There is no shortage of independent gift shops either. I took a boat ride from Riomaggiore to Monterroso al Mare which I fully recommend. The boat shuttle runs all day in summer and a single ticket cost me €15, but it was worth it for the views of the Cinque Terre coastline. Do not hesitate - visit the Cinque Terre! Especially Riomaggiore! It is a beautiful town, you will not regret it!Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 10 June 2024

Walking around there is very attractive and never get bored from watching and capturing photos.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 25 November 2024

Riomaggiore is easy to explore. It is only small, with a handful of sights that are all within walking distance of each other.
The marina is the main drawcard and if you only have one day to see all 5 of the Cinque Terre towns, then head straight here.
Finding the marina was a little confusing first. From the train station, turn right and head through a long pedestrian tunnel. A second small, old, gloomy tunnel leads to the fishermen's district and marina.
The marina has to be one of the most striking and scenic points in Cinque Terre.
The classic Cinque Terre photo that you see on most websites and travel brochures is taken from here - colourful tower houses in various shades of red, yellow, mustard, salmon and peach clinging to the sides of a sheer cliff that drops down to a tiny marina below.
We had several days in the area so we returned twice to Riomaggiore and had time to linger and explore.
We walked up the main street, Via Colombo. Running uphill from the train, it is a colourful and lively (albeit crowded) spot. We tried the local street food here - cones of mixed, fried seafood (Tutti Fritti was very good).
We did a sort of looped walk up Via Colombo, and down Via Pecunia. Along the way, there’s a 13th century castle, the Church of San Giovanni Battista and a couple of small chapels, the San Rocco Oratorio and the Oratorio di Santa Maria Assunta. None are must-sees but it’s a nice walk if you have the time.
Sunsets are beautiful from Riomaggiore. For the best sea & sunset views, we went for drinks to La Conchiglia overlooking the marina one evening and to A Pie de Ma, near the train station another night.
HIKING TO MANAROLA: Unfortunately the Via Dell’ Amore walking trail, linking Riomaggiore to Manarola is still closed, and will remain so at least until 2024. We found the alternate route (Trail 531) was very steep and difficult. It was not easy going and I’d think twice about doing it again.

This is the largest of the Cinque Terre towns, I think. The train station drops you off at a point where you can walk up to a sunset vantage point passing numerous stores and restaurants along the way. The town offers everything you could need but lacks a little of the charm of Vernazza or Manarola.

Riomaggiore is for me the most enchanting village in the Cinque Terre. Seeing it arriving by boat from the sea is thrilling due to the position nestled between the rocks in a perfectly symmetrical way. The houses have bright colors and are one with the colors of the fishing boats moored in the small port with turquoise water. The village, from the sea, is quite uphill but you don't feel the effort. I recommend delving into the streets, even those that seem dark and sinister: those too hide treasures and suggestive views. Truly a place to visit at least once in your life.

That headline photo is actually Monterosso not Riomaggiore which has no beach. A beautifu village but so overcrowded first week may. Too many large parties of tourists - obviously from curise liners moored south of the cinque terre. If the italian authorities keep allowing this level of tourism people will stay away. Unsustainable

Borgo Storico di Riomaggiore is literally the old town of Riomaggiore, a tiny town located in Cinque Terre National Park, in La Spezia, in the North of Italy. This town is wonderful, it is small, with old streets, with a little beach, with a fantastic port, from where you can see great views of sea, sunset and the town. Really beautiful! Also, in the old town you can see some places like Chiesa di San Giovanni, Tower of the Castle, the little Harbour (the best thing in the town!), Benedetto Murals and some beaches. If you want to buy souvenir, it is also a very good places: figures, magnets, complements for the beach, local beer, local food, etc. A charming place to come in summer (we stayed here in August-2019) or in other period of the year.

This harbor down at the village may very well be the smallest one out of the four. One interesting part was the tunnel with art work along the side. It was a little wet along the way but when you get out, you'll see the colorful harbor. It's smaller in size but very pretty!

Very beautiful, no climbing or hiking necessary. When you get to Rio Maggiore, just go down and then slightly up on the left if you are facing the water and you will have magnificent views. If you wish, go down and go closer to the houses for a different perspective. Recommend!

Riomaggiore is the first village in the Cinque Terre approaching from Pisa/La Spezia and being the smallest it wets the appetite to explore the other four villages.
The small harbour is picturesque and the steep walk down and then back up the hill to explore the upper village area will need basic fitness but the experience will be worth it.

Widely considered the worst of the 5 cinque terre.
Once I went I understood why. Dirty water, only climbing to do but not the great views other Terre offer.
Also seems like a tourist trap as there are no parkings anywhere for both cars and motorbikes unlike all the other 4 Terre. In fact all the motorbikes and cars parked (safely and out of the way) to the side of the road got heavy fines. Talking with a local he told me all the police does day long is search for vehicles to fine.
Seems like this is done on purpose to extract as much money as possible from tourists.
So just don't visit and go to Porto Venere instead (defenitely more beautiful).

We stayed there for 3 days; took a boat to explore all Cinque Terre towns. That part of Italy has lots of personality. Not to be missed.

Hello I am planning to do a photography tour in Italy and spend Feb 21-24 in Cinque Terra. Is everything close at that time or do I have options if trails are closed to get these beautiful sites?

It all depends on the weather. They do have a website you can consult before you go. Also, you can get good shots from the ferry, also weather permitting.
