Neighbourhood: Vatican / Borgo
Frocked priests, colorful Swiss Guards, insistent souvenir shop owners, flag-waving tour guides, and pilgrims from around the world. This is the Vatican and Borgo, Rome's most recognized neighbourhood which acts as Vatican City's front yard. Aside from the souvenir boutiques and a few food spots, the only business conducted here is papal. In the daytime, the tiny medieval sector bustles with holy activity, as visitors vie for elbow room, or stand in line for a visit. Once the sun sets, the neighbourhood is transformed into a quiet and picturesque hamlet.

The original Bramante Staircase is located in and a part of the Vatican Museum. This staircase if generally off-limits to visitors but some guides have access as ours did. We were allow to go to the top of the stair where we had a rooftop view of Rome across the river. If you are on a group tour of Vatican Museums ask your Tour Director about the possibility of visiting.

So much to see at this museo. Not as big as some of the others but that isnt a bad thing if you get sore feet from hours of standing.

On the way out of Vatican’s marvellous galleries and exhibitions, you’ll pass down this helix-shaped staircase. Before it, you will have seen exhibitions including Museo Pio Cristiano that has several interesting pieces, but the staircase is the main lure. Great photograph opportunities.

What an amazing place packed with so much history and artefacts. This is an absolute must see when I Rome. The place is huge with plenty to see. It was out of season so the crowds were not as bad as they are in peak season, so early November was a really great time to visit. The Sistine chapel itself was smaller than I expected but was still amazing to see.

Buy a ticket in advance online, getting to the museum late morning or after lunch, can be a shorter way, better to decide how long you will spend here, it's easy to collapse from museum fatigue; not possible to see every thing; classical statury, Etruscian relics, Renaissance paintings, Egyptian art, etc.so amazing to admire this splendid Museum.

What a view, lucky enought that there was not many people here when we visited. The staircase is a masterpiece in itself and it a wonderful entrance to the vatican museem.
We were very lucky that the escalator was broken when we arrived and we had to walk up the rotating staircase to get to the museum. This is a marvelous and intriguing entrance piece to any museum and should be used by everyone, not just when the main escalator is broken.

Donato Bramante designed a double helix staircase in 1505, but this version was designed and built in 1932. People can ascend and descend without meeting each other. It is interesting architecture

Quite honestly it was gorgeous but way too many crowds and we weren’t even there on peak season! Too busy to be enjoyed properly, shame.

This is such a cool staircase, that is worth your time and visit. Look down and marvel, look up and marvel. How they were able to build such perfection without modern tools just boggles the mind.
