Basilica di Santa Maria in Aracoeli is next to Capital Museum and there is a flight of stairs leading up the Basilica. In fact you can visit this place from the nearby Capital Museum as well.

Rome boasts more than 900 churches and only a small percentage of those are visited by throngs of tourists--and for good reason. This church is not on most tourist circuits, so maybe that is a good reason to peek inside. It sits atop the Capitoline...More

We stumbled upon this church by accident. It is accessed by climbing a steady staircase next to the stairs for the Piazza Del Campidoglio. Inside was quite airy, quiet and cool. It was a little more understated than many other gaudy churches we have seen.

This church is adjacent to the Capital Museum and requires a climb of huge numbers of steps but worth it if you like Basilicas, frescos and works of arts inside the church. The church does not look much from the outside and can be easily...More

I began my day's explorations with this 6th Century church, which appeared to be accessible only by climbing a long, steep staircase. Belying the severe, brick Romanesque façade, the interior of the church was lovely. High windows let in plenty of light, allowing me to...More

And ended up at the entrance of this Romanesque/Gothic church.. Interesting dresses on display.. something different to see compared to all the gilt on the baroque and renaissance churches. And, to be fair, this place is understated compared to some of the others.. Was late...More

We stumbled upon this cathedral while wandering Rome and it was incredible! There are many saints buried here and the paintings are amazing. There is no charge to get in! Take 122 steps up for a beautiful view of the city!

If it wasn't between so many amazing sites (Campidoglio, Capitoline Museums, and much more) - it might have gained a higher rank. Nevertheless, if you are visiting this area - don't miss it! The art is excellent, and the entire architecture is very nice. Some...More

We wanted to get to Campidoglio but took thr wrong staircases into this basilica and were astoned. Great picturrs, dresses and it was almost empty so we could take pictures (although forbidden) and wander around. Great place to visit an impressive church.
