Amazing doors on the front of this very large church. Like most buildings in the historic area it needs work. Nice however.

Sadly, the City of Naples is a filthy place, with over-flowing garbage cans, amazing amounts of senseless graffiti (including on this church and other monuments), and the smell of pee in certain parts of the old pedestrian areas. If you can, skip Naples altogether -- we visited what looked like a beautiful church but we were shocked by all of the graffiti. Clearly the citizens of Naples do not value their own tourist attractions. What a waste. Naples' city leaders needs to invest in cleaning its streets and catching the so-called graffiti artists that are certain to drive away the tourists. I suggest that you avoid Naples entirely when planning a trip to Italy. While there are some very fine hotels, the tourist areas are not worth visiting.

At times, touring and traveling is a lot of work and can be hectic. We happened upon this church, not off the beaten path, but not as frequently sought out for a visit. It was lovely, quiet, personal, intimate and bright. Might not be the soul of historic little Naples, but I believe that the believers and parishioners of this basilica church located on the corner of Via Vicaria Vecchia and Via Duomo, collectively espouse the soul of Naples.

This is a couple minute walk from the cathedral, and it's worth stopping at. The staff (volunteers?) at the church were very helpful - gave us a laminated guide in English (they have several different languages), to be returned when we were finished, and they were able to answer my husband's questions. There are more paintings and relics behind the alter that they showed us, including some paintings of St George slaying the dragon (they have one painting that they can move over another). We were glad we stopped.
