Loved this place, in my opinion the best museum in Matera. Housed in a former Palace cave system, worth a visit just to see the caves. The exhibitions of modern art a interesting, housed in 8 or 10 separate huge caves, all unique. Some very...More

Tourists come to Matera to experience the sassi or caves. This museum displays Modern and Contemporary art in one, which really enhances the experience. It’s a good collection of mostly sculptures on two floors. There is an elevator but it would be difficult for some...More

Extraordinary sculpture museum in the old city of Matera - well worth the visit. The museum has many display areas, and pictures of the artists are included in each room, making the exhibit that much more interesting.

Loved this museum as so unusual. Sculptures in cave dwellings really atmospheric. Never been anywhere like it and you must visit whilst you are in Matera! Really interesting collection of work.

We only had 20 minutes before closing but were able to view most sculptures. We did not find this a highlight of Matera.

Modern works of art smartly placed in large cave rooms that were at one time the `home' of a well off family. Worth a look for sure.

If you are staying more than a day in matera that you should really visit the MUSMA. It has a big collection of contemporary sluptures, all placed in the suggestive interiors, from underground caves to open inner courtyards.
