We visited the Platja de la Nova Icaria beach the day after we went to Barceloneta. We preferred this beach over the first as there were less people (still busy though) and the water seemed cleaner and clearer.

This beach was the other side of the port to Barceloneta Beach. It was pretty clean and less touristy, but when we visited there were small gangs of un-delightful looking people hanging around the port wall.
A very nice and clean beach. You can find many supermarkets in the area.
