We had read a lot about this church. It is indeed very old. It was raining when we went and that added to the charm. Plus the number of tourists were less! It is a stones throw away from Plaza Espana. We are very glad we could see the inside of the church too. But we left soon as a service was to start.

But could only see from the outside. Church was locked and convent not open to visitors. Could only enter outer courtyard with fountain.

Romanesque original church with some added spaces.
Five minutes walk from center. Good spot for personal introspection and prayer.

Don't look as this as a destination until itself. Consider it a stopping point in a journey. The church itself is interesting, but do yourself a favor and get here by some winding side streets and explore around the area. Except for the motorized vehicles around (and they are few), you'll feel as though you might have been transported back a century. All of Aviles, in fact, has that laid back air that seems like it comes from another time, and this church seems to capture that feeling very well.

This was on our walking tour of Aviles which covered many other old and interesting buildings. I would have liked to spend longer in this delightful quarter.

I always come in when visiting Aviles. I remember it as being called "La iglesia de los padres" and it is one of the oldest buildings in town. The square is a charming space and walking along the calle de la Ferreria one cannot avoid being transported to the middle ages. It is a very magical atmosphere.
The only negative note: the pushy romanian beggars that seem to have colonized the entrance.

Lovely medieval church located within a plaza. Returned to see it again since my parents were married there 62 years ago. They have renovated the historic area to its original beauty.
