Don't rely on the Hife bus service to get you there. It is sporadic and unreliable. The history of the place and its meaning maje the visit worthwhile but most things are in Spanish.

Interresting visit … we learned a lot of this visit.
We used the audioguides and we’re ok with this.

Interesting town to visit, but whilst the town was battered in the war, it is now reduced to rubble by Father Time.

I saw the review of Sandy W, which surprised me. She was disappointed probably because she was poorly prepared and her Spanish is obviously not as good as she thinks it is. There are simultaneous translation devices available to everyone. Belchite is one of those places, like Oradour-sur-Glane, that is simply a tragic example of war and everything that people are capable of doing. Our guide was the granddaughter of a survivor and her tour was extremely touching and interesting. This is something that everyone needs to see. Book online. Lots of parking and take water, it’s a 1&1/2h tour

Had been looking forward to this for years - the prospect of wandering the ruins and taking in the history. Instead we were part of a guided tour of about 40 people with a guide who rattled through everything at 90 miles an hour clearly reciting from a memorised script. My Spanish is good but she was impossible to follow. We ended up leaving early (only possible by tagging onto another tour group that was an hour ahead of us.). Not recommended

Well this was a very interesting afternoon. Our guide met us at the City gate . She was very friendly and supplied us with an information sheet i English and an audio with head phones which was in English . We were well informed. But just wish we had more as the lady seemed to talk for ages at each stop and we only got the basic information. Wish i had studied Spanish before we made this visit. But the Spanish people seemed to really enjoy it . Just feel the talks the lady was giving should be fully translated in other languages. But still found it very interesting.

I managed to book online in advance of our tour and was given details of where to report. Parking and toilets readily available. Professional guide who gave us an easy-to-use audio guide. That, plus our sufficient knowledge of Spanish made it very interesting even if we didn't understand everything that was being said. Not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs and there is a lot of standing for the 90 minute tour so wear comfortable shoes.

The visit to Belchite was one of the highlights of my trip to the Zaragoza area. The once grand municipality has been an abandoned ghost town since 1937 when Franco decreed that it’s razed, war torn streets remain untouched, as monument to the power of Nationalism following the Spanish Civil War. Visits are permitted via guided tours only & are around 90 minutes duration, invariably by a local. Day & evening tours are offered & my group was around 25 people strong. The lovely guide running the tour didn’t speak English but I was given an audio guide which did the job & suited me fine. It is a fascinating attraction, a tragic testament to the brutality & futility of warfare.
Shortly after the battle, Franco ordered the inhabitants of old Belchite to move to a newly built town close by. New Belchite is a low key, low rise, steady away spot, with just a handful of modest cafes & restaurants. I had an enjoyable & very welcoming lunch at a restaurant called Aguas Vivas. There's a small, rudimentary, but very friendly tourism office in the new town. I called in for walking directions to old Bechite as the bus from Zaragoza drops off in the new town, about 10 minutes walk away.
Belchite tours run several times a day & can be booked online. €8 for an adult. The on-line site showed no availability on the various days I wished to visit, but thankfully a phone call from the extremely helpful tourism office in Zaragoza sorted me a ticket for the desired slot. If you’re driving to Belchite you can park immediately outside the entrance/meeting point. If you don’t have your own wheels there is a fairly regular bus from Zaragoza. Check that the timetable coordinates with tour times before booking your tour. The journey takes approximately 45 minutes.

We had an unfortunate experience in Belchite. We hoped to stop by here on the way from Barcelona to Madrid. You have to book a time and purchase tickets in advance, for a site that is a bit off the beaten track. Due to traffic jam outside of Barcelona, we were about twenty minutes late for our scheduled time at 11:00. Unfortunately even though the village was small and not many tourists the only thing that they could offer was another time slot at 17:00, impossible for our itinerary. The old village is completely locked so without the guided tour there is absolutely nothing to see. It was incredibly disappointing as we went well out of our way for this historic site. It must be the only location in Spanish that holds to such a tight schedule.

Is it possible to visit the ruins in December? Do the tours run all year round?

Hi, I wanted to film something here and was just wondering how accessible is it? I have tried to find the tourist board online but couldn't. Is it possible to just walk in and have free reign of the place as some people on this thread have stated or has that changed? any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

Hi, we arrived at about 12 just when a tour was ending... the next one was at 4... I think just 2 a day. They were filming for the BBC during the first tour and I got to chat to the 2 camera people... they'd arranged it with the local tourist organisation in the town. However we didn't have time to wait so we drove to the back of the site near the cathedral and crawled under the fence. Because it was between 12:00 and 3, the Spanish siesta, the place was deserted and we looked over the whole site. It really is memorable (if you like that sort of thing) and for us a "must see". I suppose if you're using professional equipment crawling under the fence would not be an option, but the tourist office is near the church in the centre of the "new" town. Enjoy!

It is in the middle of nowhere. When we went, we were visiting our daughter in Zaragoza and had a rental car. A 40m drive. You need to be aware that they run scheduled tours so you just don't show up and walk around. It's got a gate that's locked. We bought the tickets at the local tourist information center. You could take the AVA to Zaragoza and rent a car at the train station. Not expensive and an easy drive. I found the site fascinating from a historical perspective.
