During our stay in Frankfurt, we took an excursion to Kassel, the charming city of Grimm Brothers, famous German fairytale writers. After about 1.4 hour train ride from Frankfurt Hbf to Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe Bhf and a short taxi ride from the station, we arrived at the road side of Schloss Wilhelmshöhe (Wilhelmshohe Castle) inside Bergpark. From there, we walked around the vast and beautiful park, and walked all the way up to a fairytale like Schloss Lowenberg.
Unfortunately, the castle was under major renovation, limiting our access to the inside of the castle. But the castle was beautiful from outside even with construction barriers. The castle would look much more romantic and charming upon completion of its renovation. After admiring the outside view and limited inside view of the castle, we walked down all the way to the place where we got off our taxi. There, we took a taxi to the train station for our next excursion destination, Eisenach before returning to Frankfurt. This castle is a must see attraction in Kassel once the renovation is over. [An advice for future visitors to this castle and Hercules Monument: Take a taxi to near the top of the park, and get off there for the visits to Schloss Lowenberg and/or Hercules Monument first. Then, walk down toward Schloss Wilhelmshöhe at the bottom of the park, because the winding uphill path to the castle was often quite steep and very very far.]

Beautiful fairytale castle with plenty of photo opportunities. We first spotted the castle from the Steinhofer waterfall in Bergpark Wilhelmshoehe. We couldn't wait to get closer for a better view. The whole park is magical, a must-see. Allow plenty of time for your visit, we were there for 5 and a half hours. We loved the water cascades. Pick a day to visit when they are on. We were so glad we did.

This is where Walt Disney got his ideas. An old castle deliberately built as an ancient ruin some 300 years ago. Don't miss it if you visit Wilhelmshöhe and the Hercules monument.

We drove from downtown Kassel up to the castle. There was a gate arm obstructing the road, and it wasn't clear why. We parked about 1/4 mile back down the road and followed what looked to be a path up to the castle. There, we found that most of it is covered by scaffolding. We made our way inside only to find a sign that said there was nobody around but that tours happened every hour on the hour. Unfortunately, it was about 20 min after the hour, and we didn't want to wait around. Maybe next time...

A romantic mock-medieval castle build in the late 18th century is featuring the style of a much older medieval knight's castle.

You can only visit alongside a tour. Usually crowds are small, so do not worry. However, inform yourself ahead on tour schedules.

A beautiful sight not to be missed!

It is a strenuous climb to the Burg but worth the effort. Basically it is a Folly built in Gothic style for the amusement of the Landgraf and his mistress. Viewing of the interior is by paid, guided tour and is currently limited to 3 sections because of restoration work. Might be better but currently only worth an average rating.

Although built as a "toy", this is a real medieval knights' castle, many rooms furnished and decorated with original items. The weapon and armor chamber is impressive. Great place for kids to play around the castle in the forest and park areas.

The castle was in the reconstruction, without the scaffolding must be very nice. I recommend you to wait until the reconstruction will be complete. Around the castle is Very very nice huge park with historical aqueduct and etc.

Kids were excited to have inside look of the castle. It is beautiful castle indeed but during our visit, most of the part of the castle was under construction. we spent around 30 min and left the place disappointed.
