About
The watchtower is currently closed due to construction work. Get more information in our Museum “DIE MAUER | THE WALL” around the corner on Leipziger Platz 11: www.diemauerthewall.de After 1989, almost all relics of the Berlin Wall have been demolished. The only authentic watchtower in the City of Berlin is located at Potsdamer Platz. There were more than 200 of this type along the Wall. The watchtower is most likely the oldest testimonial of the German separation. As a private initiative, we have taken it over from the City of Berlin, refurbished it and made it accessible to the public.

Not sure if this relates to the correct watch tower but we walked to find the watch tower at Potsdam area not far from the spy museum .
It was great to see one of the last remaining towers in the city .

We arrived around 11:30am. I had read that there was construction all around the tower, and that the tower was off limits, behind gates and fences of the construction site. I still wanted to make the quick detour down the dead end street to see it. Kind of sad seeing it among the construction equipment. I hope they are able to save it. Either where it stands, or perhaps move it to another location. I am glad I took the time to see it.

This small watchtower can be found near Leipziger Platz. It is the last original GDR watchtower, from which GDR soldiers once watched over the inner-German border and looked for republic refugees.

Ugly old remnant of the Cold War, tucked away in a sad little corner behind Potsdamer Platz, as it should be. Satisfying detour.

This tower is located down a quiet dead end street a few minutes from Potsdamer Platz so easy to visit if you’re in the area, or walking between Pd. Pl. and checkpoint Charlie. The tower itself is surprisingly small and I imagine very cramped for the sentries manning it. Probably isn’t worth a special trip just on its own however if you’re nearby it’s worth a small detour

Visited here last week Sept 2020. The guide was about to close the tower but stayed to allow my friends and I to climb up. Amazing to think that theres only 2 towers remaining out of about 60. This tower must be kept as a reminder to East/West. The tower must be preserved.
A great find hidden away behind a modern office complex. Definitely worth a visit.

Currently closed due to Corona and with no real information around it when we went. There was some indication that you might be able to arrange a visit via a tour of another museum but we didn't have time left in our trip to investigate. It is worth looking at to remind yourself of the constant surveillance the border was under - also what a claustrophobic experience it must have been for the guards as well - its actually pretty tiny! The Gunther Litfin memorial in the Invaliden Strasse area is much bigger and open during corona if you want to see inside a tower.

I was told that there are only 2 of these towers left in Berlin, we visited the one near Potsdammer platz and it is a little difficult to locate. The easiest way to find it is to say its behind the huge German spy museum. Sadly it was closed due to Covid whilst we there so we could not visit the interior. Nevertheless it is a good photo opportunity.

Having found out this was around the corner, I came for a visit. There are only a couple of these towers left and this survived as the housing in East Berlin was extended past it making it redundant and therefore it survived the Wall coming down. I was told it is soon to be moved to protect it from construction traffic when works are done on the Bundesrat.

For a small fee, you can climb up the tower and look around. It is very interesting and you can see how it might have been at the height of the Cold War.

There are two (in)famous towers left in Berlin nowadays (not counting the big TV tower) - the one on the death strip at Bernauer Str. where's the Berlin wall memorial museum and this one close to Potsdam Pl. During the Cold war era there were plenty of them, of course.
Today this small tower looks very stupid, ugly and useless, and a younger non informed visitor surely asks himself what's that.
But, it's a poignant reminder of the cold war era and divided Berlin. I'm glad they kept it standing to reminds us all on those harsh times.
