Founded by Guido Salanus in 1262
Aug 2011 • Couples
Augustinian monastery, consecrated to St George, founded by Guido Salanus in 1262. Augustine-hermits, women who voluntary led in strict seclusion a religious life in Inclusions, for example: 1321 mentioned an Inkluse named Megardis. J Salem wrote 1457 in a letter about the "Mantlelets" (the 3rd orde of the Dominicans, named to the order of their mantle) who lived under the monastery-choir. Some Terziarines (Franciscan order) joined, which led to an intense conflict between Franciscans and Augustinians, which was only settled in 1472. The monastery was not abrogated with the secularisation: the remaining Augustines moved to the vacant Dominican convent. Around 1572 the Convent was closed. The House of the nuns was ceded to the City Council and served as a residence for nurses 1811. Originally a hospital located in the Augustinian monastery, 1813 a teachers' seminar. 1824 Was the monastery church demolished. At present the monastery is exploited.
