If you are a Harry Potter fan, then you know what I am talking about! The streets of the old city of Freiburg remind be of Diagon Ally. The cobblestone streets gently arch as they wind along. The buildings are so quaint, but I must...More

The bachle are a charming feature of Freiburg and I was looking forward to seeing them. However since we visited on an extremely cold dreary day in December, they weren't at their prime. No water was running while we were there and I hoped to...More

First documented in the 13th century, the Bächle once served as a water supply and were used to help fight fires. In the 19th century they were seen as obsolete and most of them were covered with iron plates. The Bächle were seen by many (among...More

Saw great photos on the internet prior to our visit. Unfortunately only one section around the Munsterplatz had water running through it. I can definitely see this would be something to make your smile when visiting the town.

I have been to Freiburg and seen the Bachle before which was mostly dry. I came again yesterday and they were hosting the Bachleboat race. You first buy a wooden boat and they provide you with all the materials. Use your imagination to create your...More

The Baechle are good fun when they are full of water, but although all seemed to be functioning when we arrived on July 2, many of them have been dry during the last few days. At our hotel a desk clerk offered the possibility that...More

The Bächle are part of the life blood of Freiburg, crisscrossing through the town and much enjoyed by children in summer. I mention them now as I had a letter to The Daily Telegraph in the UK published last week, which criticised London for saying...More

I remember the bachle from when I was a child visiting Freiburg. I took my shoes off jumped in. My daughter and I recreated the picture from 1972 but my husband cut our feet off!
